Team Comments

"Tournament of Minds was a great experience for me. I had a great time making the props, and an even better time presenting the play. I think we did a great job on the day and I definitely want to do it again next year."

Chelsea Berner (Year 6)

"I really liked being in the Tournament of Minds group. I thought it was a good experience and I learnt how to work with other people older than myself. I would like to do it again next year."

Samantha Williams (Year 6)

"I enjoyed doing Tournament of Minds because it gave me a chance to be creative. It also gave me a lot of experience. I will definitely be trying to get into the team next year."

Harriet Whiley (Year 6)

"Our team this year was very successful and I think we went better this year than last year. I really enjoyed it."

Alexa Borak (Year 7)

"This was the first time that I had been in the tournament team, but I found it to be a very good experience. I was able to be creative and with lots of different ideas, we eventually came up with a good solution."

Bernadette Brown (Year 7)

"This was my second year in the team. It was an enjoyable experience right from the start. It taught us how to co-operate and use team work."

Hannah Gross (Year 7)

" I hadn't been in the team before, but I really enjoyed being able to think creatively. Even though we didn't win, I think we still did really well. If I had another chance to be in the team, I would."

Catherine Newbery (Year 7)

The team would like to thank Mr. Houston, Mr. MacLean and all the parents who "put up with us" and helped transport the team and props to Flinders University.

On Sunday 29th August, a team of students from Year 6 and 7 took part in The Tournament Of Minds at The Flinders University.

Tournament of Minds is a problem solving programme for teams of students from both primary and secondary schools. They are required to solve demanding, open-ended problems from one of the following disciplines:
                       Language Literature
                       Maths Engineering
                       Social Sciences

It is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

The objectives of the tournament are:-
To develop creative problem solving approaches and techniques
To foster cooperative learning and team work
To promote knowledge and appreciation of self and others
To encourage experimentation and risk taking
To expand and reward creative and divergent thinking
To stimulate a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning
     To develop enterprise
     To celebrate excellence

This year, our team chose to solve the Social Sciences problem. The team had six weeks to prepare for the tournament, without any parental or teacher assistance. Although the team was not successful in gaining an award, they prepared, planned and performed excellently.

Our team performs at a school assembly.

Students were able to audition for a part in the team. The final selection was done by Mr. MacLean and the team's facilitator, Mr. Houston. The students set about their preparation in their own time, regularly staying back after school to rehearse and prepare their solution.
