On Monday 27th August, Co-Opera once again visited Happy Valley School. This year it was to present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's, "Cosi Fan Tutti."

This is the fifth year that Co-Opera has performed at our school, following  performances of :-

"The Magic Flute" in 1987
"Carmen" in 1998
"The Marriage of Figaro in 1999
" La Boheme" in 2000

Although the performances have been modified and levelled at a younger audience, each has retained much of its unique sense of drama and theatre.

Mozart’s final comic opera, Cosi Fan Tutte is a laughing look at the twists and turns of romantic love. The story begins in a Neapolitan café, where two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, argue with the older and more skeptical Don Alfonso that their fiancées, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, would never betray them. Aided by Despina, the sister’s maid, the men hatch a plot to test the women’s loyalty.

They disguise themselves as soldiers and woo each other’s lovers, managing through various tricks to win over the initially reluctant women.  As deeper feelings surface, however, the suitors become uneasy with their antics, and once the deception is unmasked, the four reunite, though who pairs up with whom remains a mystery.

Once derided by some for being frivolous, Cosi Fan Tutte is a delightfully ambiguous opera, now recognised as one of the finest, most perfectly constructed tragi-comedies ever written.

Over the past five years, the students at Happy Valley School have had a wonderful sample of some of the finest and most popular operas ever written.

Before and after the performance, the cast also took the opportunity to talk about asthma and introduced those members of the cast who suffer from the problem. These cast members explained how they are able to sing, perform and overcome the effects of asthma. The Asthma Foundation is one of the sponsors of Co-Opera.

After the performance had finished the cast and students were able to chat informally about the opera. "Cosi Fan Tutte" was another fine performance from Co-Opera and the staff, students and parents thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
