Student Comments

"As well as learning the songs, we had to make lots of decisions.  We had to organize the costumes and design tickets, posters, and the program."

"We learnt lots of information about rainforests too. We learnt about   rainforest locations, the trees that grow in rainforests and the animals that live there."

Above: The Narrators: It was important for us to practice our parts so we knew what to say and when to say it. We had to practice speaking slowly and clearly into the microphone.

"Our trip to the zoo allowed us to research an animal of our choice. From our research we made booklets, posters and dioramas to share our learning."

"We made a tree in the wet area and decorated it with lots of different works of art to look like a rainforest environment and we also made the background set for the play."

"In Technology, we made individual logos for T-Shirts. These will help us remember the great work that we did in the play."

"We were fortunate to have two talented student teachers to share this learning experience with us."

"We talked a lot about environmental issues and ways we could look after our world.  On World Environment Day, we planted trees with our families in the Reserve."

"As part of our Enterprise learning, we asked for a gold coin donation at the performance. The money our audience donated was given to the Wilderness Society towards their work for Conservation.  We raised $190."

Above: We designed transfers for a T-shirt and ironed them on. Now we will remember the Emerald Crown forever.

"We also took a video of the performance and sold it for $10 per copy. The children decided to use the money raised from the sale of the video for a framed Rainforest picture, Rainforest Book, a stuffed animal and a Rainforest music CD for our unit."

"We used Quality Improvement Tools like Multi-Voting, P3T, Deployment Flow Charts and a Parking Lot to help us. "

Students from Mrs. Brettig's and Mrs. Higgins' classes perform "Emerald Crown"

During Week 8 of Term Two, students from Sue Higgins' and Jacqui Brettig's classes performed "Emerald Crown" in the School Hall. During a hectic and exciting week, these enterprising Reception to Year 2 students presented a full dress rehearsal to the whole school and two evening performances to large, appreciative audiences of parents, friends and relatives.

The cast perform a full dress rehearsal for the whole school in the School Hall

"Emerald Crown," a musical that brings emotions alive and warns of the destruction of the world's rain forests, presented a great challenge to the students in Unit 5. The production of "Emerald Crown" was inspiring, and presented the students with an opportunity to incorporate Enterprise Learning Methodology into each stage of production, from the original concept and rehearsal to marketing and production.

In addition to developing the musical, the students integrated the conservation and environmental themes into many areas of the curriculum. The children learnt much about environmental issues, through carefully planned activities in The Arts, Society and Environment, and Technology. As part of the learning experience, the classes also visited the Adelaide Zoo where students conducted a study of an animal of their choice. As a result of their research, the students prepared booklets and constructed dioramas to help share their learning with others.

There were many other important tasks to perform. Tickets, programmes, set design, rehearsals and costumes all needed to be organized by staff and students. The children were fortunate to have the assistance of  student teachers, Francine Jackson and Jackie Eldrige. Their enthusiasm and expertise were invaluable.

Meet the Cast and Crew of
"Emerald Crown"
The information below is supplied by the students of Unit 5

The Narrators: Kristina, Jaimee, Savannah and Declan

We were the Narrators and we had to learn our words, which told what was happening in the story. We learnt the words at home from the scripts and our parents and teachers helped us do it well.  It took a long time to learn the words and we had to practice a lot. We had to say them loudly and slowly so people would hear us.

The Anaconda: Daniel and Josh

We were the Anaconda in the Emerald Crown.  We had to move like a slithery snake.  We had to pretend the snake was eating the fruit on the tree.  Daniel had to learn the words to say.
Right: Daniel and Josh as the Anaconda in "Emerald Crown"

The Toucan: Jake, Ben, Emily and Tori

Jake, Ben and Emily were the voice of the Toucan.  We had to say our  words in time to the rap rhythm.  We moved in time to the rhythm as we said the words too. Tori was the Toucan that acted the part.  She had to talk into the microphone and tell the workmen to stop cutting down the forest trees.  She took them to meet the Jungle Queen.

The Birds: Nicole S, Shannon, Jayden, Kellie, Isobel, Nicole R, Casey, Lachlan and Jaye

We were nine birds. We had to fly around the hall after the song 'Look Around' while just the music played.  We liked being a bird because we had pretty wings and a colourful mask.

The Workmen: Josh M, Jordan and Josh C

We were the workmen in the production.  We had to pretend we were chopping down the trees while everyone sang the 'Slash and Burn' song. We had to practice a lot till we got it right.  Then the Toucan tried to stop us cutting down the trees.  She took us to meet the Jungle Queen but we said she wasn't a queen, she was only a big pussycat because she didn't have any jewellery.

The Frogs: Reece, Adrian, Eden H and Eleanor

We liked being the frogs because we got to jump up and down and spring off the floor when everyone sang 'Down on the Ground'. We sat right at the front.  It was fun being a frog.

The Bats: Lily, Toni, Tyson S, Vanessa and Joshua B

We had to be asleep first with our backs to the audience.  Then we had to suddenly wake up and turn around and jump up and down and flap our wings. We were really excited about being a bat because it was lots of fun. We liked acting for our mums and dads and our brothers and sisters and the other classes.

The Monkeys:  Clarice, Jemma, Courtney, Joshua S,    Tyson M and Jake

We  liked being the monkeys. The costumes were good.  We liked having a mask and a tail to wear.  When everyone sang 'Jungle Disco' we got to do our own disco dance. Courtney, Joshua and Tyson liked pretending to swing on the vines.  Jemma and Jake liked scratching like a monkey.  Clarice liked scratching under her arms and jumping in time to the music.

The Butterflies: Luke, Katisha, Nathan, Alex, Kirsty, Renae, Sam, Eden W, Jeremy, Alison, Karlia, Amy and Joel.

It was good being a butterfly because you got to flutter up the isle after the song 'Look Around'.  Most of us found someone special to say "hello" to.  We liked our costumes, especially our masks.

Finally, the students would like to offer a big thank you to Mrs. Brettig and Mrs. Higgins, student teachers Francine Jackson and Jackie Eldrige and the parents of Unit 5 who made "Emerald Crown" possible. It was an experience the children will remember for a very long time !
