Oceans of Books performed in the School Hall
to a large, appreciative audience.

One of the busiest weeks in the school calendar is Children's Book Week. This year, Book Week was held in Week 5 of Term 3. It provided an excellent opportunity for students to practise literacy skills in keeping with the school priorities for 2003. The theme for this year's Book Week was, Oceans of Books.

One of the highlights of Book Week is the announcement of the Australian Children's Book of the Year Awards.  These are presented annually by The Children's Book Council of Australia. They were first awarded in 1946. Until 1952, there was only a single award category, now there are five:

  • Picture Book of the Year
  • Book of the Year: Younger Readers
  • Book of the Year: Older Readers
  • Book of the Year: Early Childhood
  • The Eve Pownall Award for Information Books

Some of this year's short-listed books

Just before Book Week a shortlist of books is announced in each category.  This year most classes at Happy Valley chose one of the short-listed books to read and study. Each class then "showed off" their activities to other classes.  A multitude of activities was planned across all year levels. Although children were involved in a host of learning activities, communication was a key element.  It was amazing to witness the many creative ways the students communicated their ideas and opinions to others. Some classes performed in their classroom  - others did an assembly item. The photo gallery below shows a selection of class activities.
