One of the busiest weeks in the school calendar is
Children's Book Week. This year, Book Week was held in Week 5 of Term 3.
It provided an excellent opportunity for students to practise literacy
skills in keeping with our school priorities.
The theme for this year's Book Week was, Reading Rocks.
A much anticipated feature of
Book Week was the announcement of the Australian Children's
Book of the Year Awards. These are presented annually by The
Children's Book Council of Australia. They were first awarded in 1946.
Until 1952, there was only a single award category, now there are five:
- Picture Book of the Year
- Book of the Year: Younger Readers
- Book of the Year: Older Readers
- Book of the Year: Early Childhood
- The Eve Pownall Award for Information Books
There were many Book
Week activities throughout the whole school. Some of the activities
included:-
-
The leadership team visited every Junior Primary class
and read nominated picture books to the classes.
-
A book fair -
after looking at the books with buddy classes, students were able to
purchase their favourite books.
-
Classes from R - 4 enjoyed the performance "Stars in your
Eyes".
-
All classes read and voted for their favourite picture
books.
-
Both assemblies had a special Rock 'n' Roll demonstration
and a surprise visit from the KING of rock'n'roll -- Elvis Presley
(a.k.a. Principal Doug MacLean !!!!!!!!).
-
Dioramas of Mutt Dog
-
Rock painting
-
Virtual rock art painting on computer
-
Multiple image composing on famous 'rock' backgrounds
-
Rock Bun eating
-
Guest speaker (geologist)
-

Although it was a
busy time for students and staff, Book Week was an outstanding success.
Special thanks to our wonderful Resource Centre staff, Judy Miller,
Phyllis Carn and Wendy Galbraith who organized most of the activities.
Thanks also to the staff and students who supported the occasion and
made it all worth while. A very special thankyou to parents,
Sandie Sherriff and Judy Tester who helped out with the Book Fair.
Finally, how could we forget 'Elvis Presley' who unexpectedly entered
the building and entertained (???? for lack of a better word!) us all.
Reading sure does Rock !!!!!!
