Students compete in the Team Relays

One of the most popular events on the school calendar is the annual School Sports Day. This year's event was held on Friday 29th February, and was attended by a large group of parents and friends.

Students once again enjoyed the friendly rivalry between the four School Houses, Chandler, Mason, Nicolle and Shepherd.  This rivalry has existed ever since the house system was first introduced in 1978.

2008 House Captains

Each year the students elect House Captains who are responsible for a variety of tasks in both the weeks leading up to Sports Day and on the day itself. These tasks include organizing and training relay teams, maintaining team morale and discipline, liaison with staff and general team organization. This year the following students were elected.

This Year, Sports Day commenced with Buddy Class activities. This was followed by the traditional and keenly contested Championship Sprints in which the fastest runners from each School House compete against each other for the year level championship title.

The Primary School Sports Day (Year 3-7) is conducted on a participation basis with the children encouraged to take part in all events, except the Championship Sprints and Team Relays. In these events only the fastest runners from each year level participate.

Although the main emphasis of Sports Day is on enjoyment, improving personal performances, skill development, fitness and participation by all, the Primary section of the school (Year 3-7) competes in a House competition. All children contribute points to their House for each event in which they participate.

Under the leadership of Sue Higgins, the Junior Primary students were involved in a variety of activities. These activities were taken by members of a variety of sporting and community groups from our district. These activities proved very popular and the students gained valuable direction and coaching tips to help develop their skills.  The feedback from staff, students and parents was once again very positive. The activities were based on skill development, fun and participation by all. Nevertheless, the students were very keen to succeed and they tried very hard to achieve their best.

2008 Final Results

This year's final result was extremely close, with little separating the four Houses. At the end of the events, when all the scores were added up, it was victory to Nicolle followed by Mason, Shepherd and Chandler. It was Nicolle's fifth consecutive Sports Day victory. A school record!

Our thanks go to Scott Francis (Primary) and Sue Higgins (Junior Primary) for the huge amount of work they performed in organising activities, preparing students for the day and for the many other organisational jobs required to make the day such a success.

The school would also like to thank all of the parents who assisted in any way on Sports Day. Without their willing support many aspects of Sports Day would not be possible. Parents helped record, score, measure and time many events as well as assist in the canteen and stalls.

Kylie Raymond (Principal) and Doug MacLean thank everyone involved in another successful Sports Day and announce the final scores.

Congratulations also to the dedicated House Captains who worked so tirelessly in the weeks leading up to Sports Day. Their organization and leadership skills were greatly appreciated on Sports Day itself.

Thanks must also go to all of the staff for their efforts with organization and scoring, and to Mike Lane (Grounds-person) for his outstanding work in preparing the oval for the day.
