In 2008, a new Student Leadership Council was established at our school. The new 'SLC' is aimed at giving students more opportunity to participate in the School Decision Making process.

At the commencement of the 2008 school year, all Year 7 students were invited to apply for a position on the new Student Leadership Council.  From this, twenty six Year 7 students were selected to attend a Leadership Camp at Woodhouse Activity Centre. The camp was held from Monday 11th to Wednesday 13th February. The students who were involved in the three day camp participated in leadership skill building experiences and in teamwork activities. The program included:

  • What it means to be a leader

  • The purpose of the Student Leadership Council

  • The 2008 Kookaburra Council Structure and its relationship to the SLC

  • Voting procedures for Kookaburra Council

  • Developing a Flow Chart which shows the relationship between all groups

  • A Student Leader's role in promoting school activities

The students really enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships with each other and to learn valuable leadership skills.

Then, on Monday 3rd March, six Year 7 students, who were members of our Student Leadership group, attended the National Young Leaders Day at the Convention Centre. They were involved in a range of self development activities and they heard from several high profile speakers -- Geraldine Cox (Founder of the Sunrise Children's Village in Cambodia), Jane Reilly (Channel 10 Personality), Troy Gray (Former AFL Player and Television Presenter) and Natalie Cook OAM (Olympic Gold Medallist in Beach Volleyball).

Each speaker gave our students hints and strategies on how to become better and more effective leaders.

Our Student Leaders have also been busy this year  planning a range of projects which will give all students more options at school.  In some cases the projects, led by the students, will raise money for charity.

Some of these activities include:-

  • a soccer carnival,

  • preparation  of Year 4-6 students for participation in Wakakirri in '08,

  • attendance at a special Drug Education Peer Leadership Day at the Educational Development Centre on 30th May,

  • organizing Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, and

  • Peer Leadership Presentation Day.

More information about these projects will follow soon.
