School Services Officer, Wendy Nicolle
co-ordinates LAP at Happy Valley School. She
takes responsibility for the administrative
jobs of the program, and recruits volunteers to work with
students, ‘matching’ the interests and abilities of both,
and helping volunteers plan programs for students learning. |

LAP (Learning Assistance Programme) is about
volunteers from the wider school community
working with students on a one-to-one basis.
The students chosen come from a wide range
of abilities. Some struggle in a particular
area of learning, some are gifted or
talented in a particular area, while others
are matched with volunteers for a wide
variety of reasons. The programme simply
assists selected students in the process of
learning by boosting their confidence and
building their self-esteem.
|
What is LAP at
Happy Valley? |
|
Volunteers, in
partnership with teaching staff,
work with students on a
one-to-one basis, for one or two
regular sessions each week.
This significant individual time
creates more learning situations
where students can experience
success, and supports their
achievement at school.
There are often
students in junior primary,
primary and secondary schools
who would benefit from
individual time with a
volunteer. Students may need
support with class or subject
work, they may be shy,
disruptive, or just need someone
to listen to them and show that
they care. Others may have a
particular interest or talent
that needs encouragement.
|
 |
The
volunteer becomes
the students friend
and mentor, sharing
in the challenge and
the excitement of
learning through a
variety of
experiences. The
support and
encouragement that a
volunteer can give
fosters the
development of a
student’s self
esteem and
confidence.
