New Term, New Faces!

Third term began very smoothly on Monday and students and staff are enthusiastically throwing themselves into the challenges of the new term.  There are some new, and not brand new, faces on our staff this term.

We are delighted to welcome back Sue Higgins, to her R/1 class, after a term of illness.  It is great to have Sue’s happy face and energy back in our school.

We are very lucky that Angela Granegger has been able to accept a short term contract of five weeks, while Inge Liepe is on leave overseas.  Angela will teach the Junior Primary German program and we welcome her.

For the first half of our year Britta Kuhlenbeck was our visiting teacher from Germany.  Now that Britta has left to work in the country, we welcome Martin Morand who will work in our Primary German program for the remainder of the year.  While Martin will only be in our school one day a week, while we share him with Aberfoyle Park High School, we are really looking forward to his involvement with staff and especially with students and their German learning.

Welcome

Welcome to the students (pictured below) who started school for the first time yesterday – Anna ELLACOTT, Austin GORDON, Dylan LAWRENCE, Hamish PLAGGEMARS, Shane STAGG, Justin SZEITZ, Thomas FOSTER, Mitchell HODGKINSON and Louise-Ann NIXON.

We also welcome Zoe UDY, Ruby DOHNT and Emma and Mike FRANCIA who have transferred from other schools and interstate.

I Hands Up For Primary I Campaign

A national survey by the Australian Government Primary Principals Association has found that our primary schools are under-resourced and can no longer meet the expectations placed on them. The survey was completed by almost 2 500 principals and deputies.
As parents of primary and junior primary school children these findings alarm us.  We are at a loss to understand why the primary sector is the least funded sector in our education system; particularly since the primary school years provide the foundations of our children’s education; the basic literacy, numeracy and life skills that will help them succeed at school and later in life.
The 422 principals and deputies from SA who responded to the survey identified 8 priority areas of need. They are:
  • Improved Facilities
  • Greater Information Technology funding
  • Greater Literacy and Numeracy support
  • Reduced Class Sizes
  • More School Counsellors
  • Physical Education and Music Specialists
  • Increased School Service Officer Time
  • Increased Administration Time
Each newsletter, we will be highlighting each of these priority areas.  This is a national campaign to promote better funding for primary education, so you can also expect to hear about one of these priority areas every two weeks through the media as well.
Our Governing Council is keen to encourage all parents to look carefully at the education policies of the major parties to ensure that specific issues currently facing primary schools are addressed.
We understand that governments always face the issue of competing priorities but our children can no longer wait for ‘their turn’ to slowly come around.  We believe our school community is very interested to know whether the political parties have any plans to address the issues identified above by SA principals and deputies.  To that end our committee is organising meetings with state and federal local members and candidates.  If you wish to come along to these meetings let us know.
The first meetings have already been set:
  • 3.00 pm Friday 27 July in the Resource Centre: Bob Such , Independent state member for Fisher

  • 1.30 pm Friday 3 August in the Staff Room:  David Cox Labor Federal member for Kingston and Delia Brennan Labor Federal candidate for Mayo

Students Tackle Science Head On
The students from Happy Valley School have the ability to understand and apply varied scientific concepts, as demonstrated by their results in the world’s largest Science Competition.

Students from this school were awarded three certificates of Distinction, twelve certificates of Credit, one certificate of Achievement and thirty certificates of Participation.

Congratulations to NICHOLAS LANIGAN, DAVID EDDY and ANDREW BRAHAM who received Distinction Awards in the Australian Schools Science Competition.  The Educational Testing Centre at the University of New South Wales has organised this Competition annually for more than twenty years.

This year, more than 450,000 students competed throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Region.

SACSA Framework
The South Australian Curriculum, Standards and Accountability (SACSA) Framework is the new Education Department curriculum that is being introduced into all schools over this year and next.  It is a priority in our school this year, and all teachers are familiarising themselves with the materials and trialing parts of them with their classes.  Included with this newsletter is a DETE leaflet explaining, in brief, what the new curriculum is all about.  If you want to know more, talk to school staff or look at the website, www.sacsa.sa.edu.au

Basic Skills Testing
The BST’s for Year 3 and 5 students will be held on Wednesday 8 August, followed by the Writing Assessment for these year levels on Thursday 9 August.  Information to parents, about these tests, went home to families earlier this week.

ROAD SAFETY NEAR THE SCHOOL
A MESSAGE FOR PARENTS
Are You A Culprit?

Greenbriar Avenue

Congestion and unsafe conditions are being caused just before the ‘turn - around’ down near the shelter-shed area due to cars being parked between the hump and the turn-around.  Designated parking spaces have been allotted in the correct area prior to the hump. The road is not wide enough to allow parking between the hump and the turn-around as well as allowing safe driving conditions on Greenbriar.
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR PARKING AT THIS SPOT.  WE URGE PARENTS TO PLEASE REFRAIN FROM DOING THIS ESPECIALLY AT THE BUSY TIMES BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL.

Education Road

Many parents are modelling to their children and other students the incorrect way to cross Education Road by not using the designated crossing, but instead walking across the road at any spot.!! This is disappointing to see given the emphasis on road safety programs which are in your child’s school curriculum.
WE URGE ALL PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO USE THE EDUCATION ROAD CROSSING AND NOT CROSS RANDOMLY AT ANY SPOT.
We realise this takes longer and is not always easy when time is short but it is a very important safety practice.

Tournament of Minds
After two terms of trying out and preparing themselves, our Tournament teams for this year have been selected.

Congratulations to the following students who will represent Happy Valley in this year’s Tournament of Minds, to be held on Sunday 9 September.  We have entered two teams this year for the first time and they will now spend the next six weeks working hard to prepare themselves for the competition.
