WE’VE LOTS TO CELEBRATE!

Welcome back!  A special welcome to Sandra Bailey and Jacqui Brettig who have returned from leave.

The last term is always a busy one, with many events planned.  Happy Valley School has a wonderful tradition of community celebration and we look forward to you joining us at coming events.  The focus of these annual events will be recognising the many contributions, achievements and successes of students, parents and staff during 2003.  A term planner, for the fridge door, is included in this newsletter.

World Teachers’ Day
World Teacher’s Day is tomorrow.  This year’s slogan is “ To teach is to touch forever.”  We will celebrate the very special place that teachers have in student’s lives, with an assembly in the hall at 11:00.  Please join us, if you can.  In preparation, classes are now busily writing a “Who Am I?” which describes their teacher.  At the assembly, some of these will be drawn out of a hat and read aloud by the Kookaburra Council leaders.  Students will then try guessing the teacher described, from the clues given.

Playing this popular game will be a fun way for students to show how well they have come to know their teacher (and their habits) over this past year.  No doubt their observations will be surprisingly accurate and perceptive, revealing details that will probably surprise their teachers.

However, students would also be surprised at how much their teachers have learnt about them during the year.

Mr Jones and Michael are pictured working together.

Teachers place a high value on understanding the emotional and learning needs of individual students.  This teacher knowledge is what makes learning happen.

Parents and teachers in partnership
The benefits for student learning are even greater when our parents and teachers work together with a shared understanding of the needs of young people.  The following three attitudes to life, modelled consistently by parents and teachers, contribute immensely to the successful lives of our students.

Common attitudes that -

  • Successful experiences, encouragement and the acceptance of mistakes are a natural part of learning.  A positive self-image for students comes from meeting challenges under the guidance of adults.

  • Belonging to a group is achieved through contribution.  Teamwork develops through opportunities to help and support others.

  • Self-discipline develops through students learning to take responsibility for their own actions.  Students need consistency and persistence from all the adults in their life to develop self-discipline.

Our assembly will recognise the contributions that teachers consistently make to develop wonderful relationships with their students.  Why are relationships so important?  Because they are the very basis on which learning happens, and we haven’t even mentioned the curriculum yet.

“To the world you might be one person but to one person you might just be the world.” Unknown.

YEAR 2003 CLASS PLACEMENTS

Are there any last requests regarding placing your child in a class for next year?  Parents may make written requests and these will be considered during the class placement process.

While we will try our best, please understand we cannot always meet specific requests.  Details of the criteria we use to select classes were published in the last newsletter.

If making a request regarding class placements for next year, please submit it in a sealed envelope to either Margaret or Brian by Monday 28 October.

PARENTS AS ART AND CRAFT TUTORS
Parents have always enjoyed the artwork that children have brought home (with love and pride) but have often been curious to know how the teacher manages to teach the fine motor skills needed in some of the art and craft that the children learn.

The Education Sub Committee are inviting interested parents to have a fun session of hands on art and craft run by Maxine Cavaggione, to show us how to have fun at making the type of things that children learn at school.

As the visual arts are a focus this year, this is a great opportunity for parents so please come along on Monday 11 November at 7.00 pm. in the school library.  Please return the tear off slip at the end of the newsletter to enrol.

The students pictured above started school for the first time last week.  A big welcome to you and your families.

We also welcome the following children and their families to the Happy Valley School community - Esther, Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah and Eliza CLAVELL and Jacob SMITH

VINES FOR SALE
Would you like a young vine plant for your home garden?  Over the last three years, students have propagated a variety of vine cuttings, which are now ready to be planted out.  The propagation project was begun, to plant a row or two of vines in the school yard.  However, we have more young vines than we need.

If you would like to order a vine plant, complete the tear off at the end of the newsletter and return it to the front office.  The cost of each plant is $1.00.  When we have your order, we will contact you regarding collection.
