Inside this issue…

A warm, balmy evening set the scene on Monday night for a wonderful end of year celebration. Our families created a carnival atmosphere, with their deck chairs and picnic rugs strewn on the school oval.

Entertainment included Christmas carols sung by the Junior Primary students, a dance performance presented by Mrs Petho’s and Mr Mueller’s class and a medley of songs by the Primary choir and band. The adults joined in the fun too, with items from Parents in Theatre and the staff. The audience also got a turn, with community carol singing led by Heather Jesshope. The evening finished in Happy Valley tradition with a fireworks display that delighted young and old.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students, parents, and teachers who prepared for and staged such a great evening for our school community, the volunteers who stayed behind afterwards to pack up and, of course, you, for being such a fantastic audience on the night.

A Celebration of 2003

At the beginning of 2003, the year 6 & 7 classes created a banner during their Orientation Day activities.

It read ‘Working together to Achieve our Goals in 2003’.  You may have seen it in the Hall.  This has certainly happened at Happy Valley this year as so many groups of people have worked to make our successful School Community.

Thankyou to everyone who has contributed to the life of the school and to the students’ learning during 2003, through using your skills, time and energy for the benefit of everyone.

A very happy Christmas and Holiday to you all.

Farewell from Margaret

It seems just like yesterday that I arrived at Happy Valley, having only heard of its reputation as a great school.  I will leave next week knowing just how great a school Happy Valley is.  My two years here as a Junior Primary principal have been fantastic.  I leave with wonderful memories of the children I have had in my care, the parents who have always been ready to be part of school life and of the dedicated staff who contribute so much to building the excellent reputation that Happy Valley has in the community.

Thank you for all your good wishes over the past few days. I too would like to wish the Happy Valley community a very successful 2004.

PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT

We welcome Peter Simmonds’ appointment as Principal of our school from the beginning of next year and look forward to him leading our school over the next seven years.

Peter has a strong background in school leadership and is currently Principal at Heysen Primary School.

THANKYOU MORNING TEA

At our thank you morning tea last Thursday, we celebrated with the many parents who have assisted in the school throughout the year.  Many aspects of the school need volunteer support and we are grateful that so many people offer to assist on committees and Governing Council, LAP, with sports teams, in classrooms, Pedal Prix, Edible Garden, Busy Bees, Canteen, Resource Centre to mention a few.

We congratulate David Hirlam, Deb and David Solly, Deb Excell & Jan Pedersen who received Parent Recognition Awards for their outstanding contributions and service to the school over many years.

We thank all parents who have supported the school and are leaving as their children move on to High School.

STAFF CHANGES

Staff changes at Happy Valley are significant, whether a staff member has been here for a term, or for ten years.  We become very close very quickly.

As another group of staff leave, we recognise their contribution.

Farewell Margaret

Margaret Kellett came to our school last year, filling a one-year vacancy as Junior Primary Principal – and stayed for a second year!  She loved the role, the students and the community.

Margaret brought a great deal of warmth and laughter to our school and was very proactive in leading the Junior Primary section of the school.  She ensured that early childhood and its needs were met and promoted.  Through linking with the Playgroup and the local Kindies, she supported the importance of early years education.  She was also actively involved with older students and classes through support for Kookaburra Council and other whole school programs.

We will miss Margaret’s passion for the school and its programs, her infectious laughter and her emphasis on building sound relationships with others.  While her future directions are still unclear, we wish her the very best in the role she undertakes next year and beyond.

Farewell Merry

Merry Gabb has won a new teaching position at Woodend School, so will be leaving at the end of the year.

Merry has been such a positive, active member of our staff, spending her time at our school working with upper primary students.  It has been a real asset to have female role models always working in this section of our school.  Merry has tackled her work with vigour, commitment and fun.  Her sayings over the years are legendary, and her students are always “superstars”.

She has involved herself in a range of school programs, including the development of the ‘Jason’ project with year 7 students and supporting Kookaburra Council over several years.  She also has a fine reputation in school food catering!

We will miss Merry’s laughter, her dramatic entrances and her commitment to student wellbeing.  Best wishes go with her as she moves to Woodend School.

Farewell Helen, John and Cheryl

Helen Atanasoff came quietly to our school at the beginning of the year, taking responsibility for our reception class.  Over the year Helen has developed a huge reputation with her students, her class parents and with staff.  She has a great relationship with her students and has had them presenting quite outstanding performances – at assemblies, at the Thank You Morning Tea and on Christmas Celebration Night.  Thank you for your contribution to our school Helen and best wishes as you move to Warradale School next year.

John Kuik took responsibility for a year 3 class this year.  John’s commitment to quality teaching, to his students and to giving students enjoyable and valuable learning experiences was excellent.  John will be well remembered for the musical ‘One Hundred Year Rock’ which he directed and produced with the Year 3 classes this term.  Thank you John for your hard work and best wishes as you move to McLaren Vale School next year.

Cheryl Alcock also worked with a Year 3 class this year.  She has been such an organised and positive member of our staff.  Cheryl has given her class very enjoyable and worthwhile learning experiences and under her care they are all ready to move on to Year 4.  Cheryl will be well remembered for the most amazing artwork that she does with students with her classroom looking like an art gallery throughout the year.  Thank you Cheryl for your commitment and best wishes as you move to Craigburn School next year.

Farewell Kerry

Kerry Hooper became the first point of contact in the office area of our school in the middle of the year.  With her happy, positive manner and caring approach she has been a wonderful person in this key position in the school.  Thank you Kerry for your fantastic involvement in this demanding role and we wish you the very best in your future work.

Long Service Leave

Simon Mueller will be on leave for the first term next year, returning to teach his Year 4 class from the beginning of second term.  At this time we don’t know who will be covering Simon’s absence.  Enjoy your leave Simon, and your time with daughter Kiara!
