DRUG INFORMATION EVENING FOR PARENTS

Happy Valley School Hall
Wednesday 9th November at 7.30 pm

The harmful use of Drugs is a huge issue in society, and it is growing. Children from our school are going to be moving into this environment as they pass through adolescence. The more aware parents are, the more knowledge and skills that we can give students, the more resilient we can make them, the better able they will be to safely navigate this part of their life.

Parents need to take advantage of this opportunity to improve their knowledge about the harmful use of drugs, and how to best support their children.

Our Special Guest Presenters on the Drug Information night will be:

  • Dr David Caldicott from the Royal Adelaide Hospital INTENSIVE TRAUMA UNIT. Dr Caldicott will talk about minimizing the harm from living in a drug using society.

  • Robert Humble from Ucount Support Services, an agency of the Aberfoyle Uniting Church. Robert Humble will present information about the "How to DRUG PROOF your kids" program. His message will be that parents CAN exert influence and implement strategies that make their children less vulnerable to involvement with drugs, but they need to be informed, equipped and empowered.
He will show a short video that further explains the programs offered by Ucount.

  • Information about EFFECTIVE PARENTING WORKSHOPS presented by Robert Humble. This free program allows for parents to explore current concerns through Behaviour Management, Communication Skills and Conflict Resolution.

If there are enough parents at Happy Valley interested, courses tailored to their needs can be arranged.

Set this evening aside and come along. It will be one of the best evenings you can spend to support your child.

Complete and return the tear-off slip at the end of the newsletter to book your attendance.

GALA DAY

What a wonderful Gala Day we had last Sunday. Not only were we blessed with fantastic weather, after a very wet Saturday - the atmosphere on the day was just brilliant.

We are as yet unsure of how much money we raised on the day, as we are still finalising accounts, but the committee will let our school community know when we have a final figure.

So many things went towards making our Gala Day such a success. Classes spent many weeks preparing their stalls, and, with the help of parents, set them up and ran them on the day. We had a team of helpers on Saturday, collecting, delivering and assembling stalls and marquees, and another group on Sunday, dismantling and returning them. Many, many helpers on the day helped the day to run smoothly. The fundraising committee would like to thank both Governing Council and Parent Club for their support for the day.

Special thanks go to our Fundraising and Gala Day Committees -- Ian Hardwick, Gerri McGregor, Sandie Sherriff, Marie Szeitz and Sue Phillips, all of whom helped with lots of the organisation for the day. However, our greatest thanks must go to Sonia Berry and Joanne Walden, for their unrelenting efforts and their ability to take so much on board, to make the day happen.

Helpers at the Plant Stall

My Mum helped to set out the Show Bags for Gala Day. There were lots to see at Gala Day -- bubble blowers, Lucky Dips, popcorn and lollies. My favourite thing was the Show Bags and the bubble blowers.

By Ben Schofield -- Mrs Higgins' class

My Mum helped me with the Show Bag stall. I liked the TYs and I got 2 TYs. I put on the things I got in my Hokus Pokus Show Bag. I think Gala Day was fun.

Staff, parents and children are helping to set up for Gala Day.

A report on Gala Day written by Hayley Ovens, Amy Cotterill, Jonathan Campbell and Stuart Allen.

Last Sunday, Happy Valley School had their Gala Day.

It started at 10 am and ended at 3pm. There were rock climbing and pony rides, jumpy castles and fire engines, land yachts and racecars.

We all agreed that we loved the strawberry and marshmallow in chocolate stall. Our favourite stalls were the tattoo stall, strawberry and marshmallow stall, Jacinta Thurston's mum's stall and the toffee stall. Most people got tattoos, even some of the teachers!! We all agree the stalls were excellent. Our favourite rides were the rock climbing and the jumpy castles. Most stalls raised lots of money, which was a great effort. It was the best Gala Day we've ever had!!

Thank you to all of the parents and teachers who helped with Gala Day!!

Some of the children dressed up on Gala Day for the Parade.

JELLYBEAN JARS
The winner of the "Jellybean Guess" with the exact number of Jellybeans -- 507 was Deb Taylor (Scout Leader).

The Vinall family were the winners of the other Jelly Bean Jar with a guess/estimate of 858.  There were 870 jellybeans in the jar.

Congratulations to both families!

VOLLEYBALL FINALS

On the 26th of October our boy's Volleyball team, made up of Ben Richardson, Jacob Herbert, Shaun Lapere, Jesse Millsteed and Cale Hutchings, played in the SAPSASA finals at the Marion Fitness Centre.

This is the first year Happy Valley has been involved in Volleyball and I would like to congratulate the boys on making it to the final round.  They were up against some tough teams and although they didn’t win they put in an outstanding effort and learnt a lot from playing against such strong competition.  Well done!

Notice to Parents re SINGING
CHRISTMAS CAROLS AT ADELAIDE
RAILWAY STATION

Thank you to those families who responded to the invitation to sing at Adelaide Railway Station on the morning of the Pageant in the city.

Unfortunately there were not enough replies to make this a viable activity and so it will not take place.

TRAFFIC TRAINING

On the 27th of October Mr Mueller's class and Mr Francis' class had Traffic Training.  A Police Officer came to our school and he taught us how to hold the stop signs and how loud we had to blow the whistle.  He also told us what to write in the book and if a car speeds past the crossing what details could you write down about the car.  The Police Officer told us when you write it down you go to Miss Williams and she will report it to the police and the police will track them down.

Tori Smallwood

On the 27th of October a Police Officer came to teach us how to be traffic monitors.  He taught us about how to stand the stop signs and when to blow the whistle.  It is very important to concentrate on the road traffic and the pedestrian traffic.  I really enjoyed the training; it is a job for me.

NATIONAL SAFE SCHOOLS
FRAMEWORK

A group of interested parents met recently to contribute from a parent perspective to this important aspect of our school management

The areas we addressed were with regard to a safe school environment.

  1. School Culture
  2. Policies, programs and procedures
  3. Provision of education and training for students, staff and families
  4. Managing incidents of abuse and victimisation
  5. Providing support for students
  6. Working closely with parents.

Anyone interested in being a part of further meetings please let Barb Williams know.

FESTIVAL OF MUSIC -- SONG BOOK
COVER

Several classes incorporated into their Visual Arts programs, designing a Song Book Cover for next year's Festival of Music publications and CD’s.

This involved looking at criteria such as required text to be included.  A summary of next year's song repertoire was supplied to students so that they could include ideas from the content and styles of the song.  The classes discussed lettering, layout of design and colour choices.

Kristi Grigoris and Alexandra Wilson were selected by their peers as Happy Valley winners and their artwork has gone into the State competition.

The year 6/7 classes left the school at around 11:00 am on two buses arriving in the city around 11:45 am. We had about forty minutes to eat lunch and have a play next to the river. There was a cafe next to the River Torrens where you could buy snacks. We went into the Space Theatre at 12:45 pm.

There were quite a few other schools watching the final dress rehearsal of the play My Sister Violet. The play cost about $50 for a family to go (two kids and two adults) but it was the final dress rehearsal so it didn’t cost anything for us watch.

The characters included Violet (Sister), Louis (ADHD Boy), Jack/Hamish (Neighbours), Libby (Mother) and Mrs. Pike (Teacher). The play is about a boy with ADHD. His family moved to the country to help his problem. He has a teacher who is very nice to him and an artist neighbour, Jack, who is nice to him. He gets really mad and hits his sister and realises what he did so he tries to make it up to her by throwing her a birthday party that goes wrong.

At the end he calms down and tries to turn his life around. Sean Riley wrote the play.
