REMINDER -- CASUAL/ CRAZY DAY

This Friday, September 15th, we will be having our Crazy/Casual Day.  Please remember a gold coin donation, to support projects organised by our numerous FORUM projects. There will be NO face paint or hair spray because some people are allergic to these products.

PHYS - ADD FITNESS PROGRAMME

All Schools in South Australia are able to apply for a grant from the "Be Active Let's Go" Project. This is part of the Government and DECD strategy to increase the fitness levels of students.

In order to support our fitness programme we have bought the 'Phys-Add' programme. Students are given a pre and post test to ascertain the level of improvement.

As this is part of the curriculum and beneficial to all students we do require all students to be involved.

Some teachers are concerned that parents are writing notes to excuse a child from the programme but the student is then quite well enough to join in other games and activities either in lesson time or break time.

Could parents please help us with strong encouragement for children to be involved?

ABSENCES, EXEMPTION AND THE ANSWERING MACHINE

Thank you to everyone for the high degree of cooperation in relation to us getting the required information and paper work about absences and attendance.

We are still coming to terms with a couple of aspects of the answering machine. Sometimes it rings quite a number of times before the voice cuts in so please 'hang in there' – it will answer.

FORUM EXECUTIVE LEADERS

At assembly this week the four executive leaders were announced. The forum executive leaders are Jack Price and Dayna Cox. The deputy leaders are Jack Reynolds and Lauri Hogan. Aspiring leaders were required to make a speech, which demonstrated their leadership skills, based on a number of criteria developed by the group. Speeches were well prepared and all did a great job. These four people will be wonderful role models for other students.

INTERNET SAFETY

There are numerous safety issues associated with children and access to the Internet. You may be interested in accessing some of the information made available through the Federal Government's Internet Safety Advisory Body, Netalert. Information can be found on their comprehensive website at www.netalert.net.au and the school is in the process of ordering an information pack for you. As soon as the packs arrive we will provide one per family.

An Internet safety checklist for your family follows.

Stephanie Kakoschke and Judy Miller

Internet Safety Checklist

Follow this checklist to help your family keep safe when using the Internet.

Before You Start
  • Talk to your family about the importance of staying safe online and the need to have an Internet safety plan for the home.

  • Teach your children how to use the Internet safely. NetAlert has a range of free educational programs for different age groups.

Getting Set Up Correctly
  • Determine if you are connected to a family friendly Internet Service Provider. If not, switch to one, which can help you with Internet safety.

  • Look at where the computer is set up at home. If it is in a bedroom, move it to a public area of the house where it will be easier for you to supervise.

  • Make sure you have safety software installed on your computer. This may include a filter and other security software such as anti-virus programs. NetAlert, your Internet Service Provider or computer retailers will be able to help you out with what to get.

Set Up The Family Guidelines
  • Discuss with your children the benefits and risks of going online and reassure them that you are there to help if they get in trouble.

  • With your children, create an Internet safety contract and set up house rules for use of the Internet.

When Online
  • Supervise and monitor the use of the Internet with your family. If issues arise address them quickly and know who to report problems to.

Encourage and support your family with their use of the Internet. Teach them to make right decisions and increase the levels of responsibility, as children get older.

CANBERRA UPDATE 2007

Dear Parents,
As you are aware, in March 2007 our Year 7 students will be undertaking an educational tour of the national capital.  The focus will be to participate in a variety of educational programs to assist students gain a better understanding of our history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education.  To assist you in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred.  This contribution will be paid directly to our school upon completion of the excursion.  We are pleased to announce we have been granted $60 per student towards the cost of our trip.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.  Therefore we are pleased to announce that the overall cost for Canberra 2007 will be $365 per student.

Regards,
                                                                    Simon Mueller

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

Well done to Kimberley McBride, Janice Davidson, Kristen Murphy, Leah Smolarek, Allison Jesshope, Amber Meyer and Stephanie Kneebone

OUR FRIENDLY SCHOOL

Parents' role in Our Friendly School

Research has demonstrated that efforts to change attitudes and behaviour of students are more likely to be successful if parents are actively involved and feel a sense of shared ownership of the process.

What can parents do to support activities in the school to reduce bullying?

  • Talk regularly with your children about bullying;

  • Encourage your children to 'ask for help' if they are being bullied at school;

  • If your children are fighting at home, help them discuss their problem and come to a mutual solution to the problem;

  • Encourage your children to be assertive by helping them practise speaking in a firm but friendly way, making eye contact, looking calm and smiling and feeling good about themselves;

  • Encourage your children to play with other children at school, at home and in the neighbourhood; and

  • Help your children improve their self-esteem by discussing the things they are good at, encouraging your children to 'have-a-go' at new activities, and encouraging your children to develop their own independence by allowing them to care for their belongings or manage their pocket money.

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

Final rounds
It was a thrilling finish to the season!  Congratulations to the individual performances of Jack Price and Luke Szeitz.  Jack played in the seniors' difficult seat one all year winning five of his seven games and they were all nail-bighters.  Well done!  Luke won his last five games straight.  It was a fabulous effort by a year six who regularly played against year sevens.  Overall, the seniors won 21 team games.

The juniors won 18 and going into the last round, only 1.5 games separated the 2nd to 7th teams!  Hats off to Shane Martin and Zacharia Hamilton who both won 4 and a half games, just missing medals but performing outstandingly for the juniors.

We will have to wait until presentation night to officially find out whether we bring home any medals.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported this year’s chess season.  The players and co-ordinators appreciated you coming!

Presentation night is on Tuesday 26th at Woodcroft College from 7.00pm.  Please bring a plate of snacks to share and a cup.  Cordial will be provided.

NETBALL
Both teams had their last game last Saturday.  The Year 6's won, completing a very successful season.  The Year 3/5's were very excited when they scored the most goals in a game for the season even though they still lost.

The girls should be very proud of themselves.  Their enthusiasm was great considering most were playing in a higher age group.

Thank you to the supportive parents and a big thank you to Mel Gavin for coaching the younger team.  I look forward to an even more successful season next year!
