Staffing News
Congratulations to Stephanie Kakoschke who has won the Deputy Principal position at Marion Primary School for the next 5 years.  We are very happy for Stephanie as she is a highly skilled teacher and deserves recognition for her achievements however we will miss her.  She will be replaced next year by Gail Richter who comes to us with great recommendations so good luck in your future Steph!

Sally Johnson will also not be with us for the first 2 terms of next year. Sally will be on leave and at the moment we do not know who will be replacing her.  We will send out a Newsflash as soon as we know.

I would also especially like to mention Bob Beaton and his retirement.  Bob has been teaching for 39 years and this is his second "stint" at Happy Valley.

As anyone who has had experience with Bob will know, he is a wonderful teacher with many skills and an all round "good bloke".  I know that Bob is looking forward to his new life but he will also be missed by the Happy Valley School community and I would like to say a big thank you to him for all of his efforts with students here, his collaborative manner on staff, his sense of humour and willingness to work at any level to improve things for Happy Valley kids.  Have a great new life Bob!

Another piece of news is that after several years doing our P.E. program Scott Francis would like the opportunity to go into a classroom full time again.  Scott has done a superb job with P.E. but has also enjoyed his classroom work this year and so we will have a little change in the school.

Scott will have year 6/7's full time next year and Simon Mueller will take on the P.E. program and share a class with Trudie.  Scott will work closely with our new person Sandra Mousley so our "middle school" will look a little different next year.

Besides Bob we are saying goodbye to Liz Loveday who has worked so well with our receptions this year, Abby Ingham who has been a "breath of fresh air" in the J.P., Marion Freer who has undertaken some excellent work with our students who need some extra help particularly with Maths, Tom Vercoe who has been an asset to our middle school and Juno Oka who, besides being a fantastic Japanese teacher, is a wiz in the garden.

Our Japanese position is yet to be filled so we may welcome back Juno and as we still have some other appointments some of the other people mentioned above may be boomerangs but in case we don't see them again we must acknowledge the work that they all have done for Happy Valley this year.

Let's also not forget the rest of our staff.  I would publicly like to thank all of our staff for their hard work, dedication and collaboration over the year.  I have been made to feel very welcome and I believe that we are very lucky to have all of them here at HVS.

It has not only been the staff that have made me feel "happy at the Valley" but the students and families that make up our community.  To you all I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and relaxing holiday season and I will see you all after the holidays.

CLASSES '08

Class notifications will be out tomorrow but please remember that these placements are only "provisional" as we are still patiently waiting to see if we have the numbers for an extra class in the Primary section of the school.

CHRISTMAS NIGHT

Our Christmas Night on Tuesday was a huge success. The dancing was a great way to start the evening and we appreciated the numbers of parents who joined in. The whole evening had a wonderful feel to it.

Our Junior Primary choir, getting into the Festive Season.

There are a lot of people who need to be thanked for their contributions to making the night such a winner. While there are so many that we are reluctant to name individuals, our school community needs to say a huge "Thank You" to Doug MacLean, who is the main organiser in pulling the evening together. Thank you also to our school community for supporting the evening so well.

Buddy classes showing their dances learnt over the last weeks.

THANK YOU MORNING TEA

One hundred and fifty invitations were sent home to parents, inviting them to our 'Parent Thank You Morning Tea' last Wednesday. This is a measure of the amount of support we get from our wonderful parents who help in the school, and with students, in so many different ways!

While not all of these people could get to the morning tea, it was a great way to express our appreciation for all of the work done and help given.

At the morning tea, five very special parents, whose last child will be graduating from Year 7 this year, were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the school over the years. They were Wendy Nicolle, Judy Hardwick, Heather Jesshope, Carol Mitic and Kathy Bartel. A very special thank you to these parents who are leaving us!

At this assembly we will farewell staff who are leaving, as well as our Year 7 group.  A representative of the Salvation Army will also attend to accept the donations of food for Christmas hampers.  Parents are most welcome to attend.

JULIE KUCHEL'S RETIREMENT

After many, many years of working at Happy Valley School teaching recorder, Julie has decided to retire.  We celebrated Julie's career with two concerts at school on Tuesday and a morning tea for staff.

Julie leaves a strong legacy behind her as she has introduced music to many of our students here over the years.  Good luck Julie in your future.

We are negotiating to find a new recorder teacher to take Julie's place for this important part of our school music program.

A VISIT FROM THE ANIMALS

Several Junior Primary classes had a wonderful visit from Waltzing Matilda's, who brought to our school a selection of very young animals. Here are some comments from the children.

"Today my class went on the lawn and a farmer was there. He was called Farmer Steven. He had some animals with him. We got to hug them and feed them. I loved the rabbits so much. There were pigs and a cow and a goat as well."

By Trinity

"Today we went to the front of the school on the grass. We all got to a part where there were lots of animals and there were piglets, chickens, goats and rabbits and the farmer's name was Farmer Steven. I patted a cow, some goats and a piglet. My favourite animals were the baby goats, the cow and the piglet. I enjoyed it. Nearly everyone loved it, especially me. It was very, very fun. It was fun patting the animals. Everything was fun. I bet our class enjoyed it."

JAPANESE GARDEN PROJECT

The creation of the Japanese garden, which was one of the major development projects in term 4, is now complete and it looks absolutely fabulous.  The centrally placed location enables our school community to capture its beauty, serenity and tranquillity in the same traditional sense that Japanese gardens are created.

Page 4

The unique design of this garden is traditionally named 'KARESANSUI' (kaleh-sun-suey) which expresses water without a water feature, by symbolising sand as an ocean or stream and the rocks with plants, as islands.  These gardens can also commonly symbolise space and planets.

The panel on the red wall depicts a poem symbolising the spirit of Happy Valley School as seen through the eyes of the author, Kristi Grigoris.  It has been expressed in both Japanese calligraphy and English which adds a beautiful finish to the garden.

However, it would not have been possible without the input and hard work of many parents, students and staff including;

  • Our fabulous groundsman Mr. Mike Lane who worked tirelessly throughout the whole project.

  • All the parents who contributed at the working bee.

  • The students who assisted Oka Sensei.

  • The Berry Family for the generous donation of the Japanese maple.

  • Mr MacLean, Mr Mueller, Mr Draper and Mrs Whisson for their wonderful co-operation, support and encouragement.

  • Jen Gormly for producing and directing the ideas and inspiration of the garden.

  • To all the other contributors who helped in someway.

  • To Barb Williams for the beautiful stone lantern.

  • And finally to the very humble OKA SENSEI !!! without whom this garden would not have come to fruition.

Our wonderful Japanese garden.

YEAR 6 CAMP TO ADARE

Urrumbirra Wildlife Park:
On the way to Adare we stopped at Urrumbirra Wildlife Park.  It felt really good to stop and stretch our legs.  On the bus we got to listen to our MP3 players and play our games and read our magazines.

We walked through the bird sanctuary and we patted the male koalas in the koala enclosure, we walked through the nocturnal house and saw snakes and crocodiles, we walked to the farmyard animal's enclosure and patted the sheep, we saw wombats, birds that talked, and we also fed the kangaroos!

That was my favourite part of Urrumbirra Wildlife Park.

At the end, we had a chance to buy something at the souvenir shop.  I bought a mood necklace and a soft ladybird backpack for mum because it was her birthday.

Adare Campsite:
When we arrived at Adare campsite we were so grateful and lucky that no one threw up on the bus trip!  We got a managers welcome and he told us the rules of the house.  What we can do and what we can't do.

Adare Campsite (as we found out) is a big, old, castle like house.  It was Awesome!  There were rumours that it was haunted too!

The dinners were cool.  You just had to join the line until someone served you.  Jaimee, Allison and I were servers on the first night.  We had pasta and fish, with vegetables.  On the second night we had spaghetti and vegetables.  But I only ate carrots because I wasn't feeling well and wasn't hungry.  Also for breakfast we had peaches, cereals and toast.

On the odd occasion, we had free time.  Where we could cross the road and go down to the oval or the playground or the basketball court and do whatever you want!

The dorm rooms were cool because they were upstairs and there were 4 bunk beds!  So in my dorm was Kate, Clare, Renae, Allison, Amber, Jaimee and I!  It was awesome.  We stayed up till 1:30 both nights!

National Trust Encounter Coast Discovery Centre:
After we settled in at Adare we walked to the National Trust Encounter Coast Discovery Centre.  (We walked everywhere on this camp, we all came back with sore legs or ankles).

The lady showed us through a house which was built when a captain came to Victor Harbour.  In other words it was a very old house.  After looking through the house we had to look through the museum and the lady talked about absolutely everything in it!  It was very educational, but that's why it was a little bit boring.

6/12/07

Dear Parents,

This letter is to inform you that at the Governing Council Meeting held on Monday, 5th November,  2007, the Materials and Services Charge and levies for 2008 was set at $280.00. The Education Minister has set the legally enforceable Materials and Services Charge for 2008 at $185.00. Attached is the verification required by The Education Department.

There is a voluntary Governing Council  approved Curriculum Levy of $30.00 which will assist the funding of the 2008 Site Learning Plan materials and an approved Information and Communication Technology Levy of  $20.00 to assist the funding of technology resources.  The  excursion/performance levy will be $45.00.  Students will be invoiced before the end of the school year.

Our Governing Council has set the fees for 2008 with the understanding that we need everyone’s cooperation in the following ways.

  • We need all families paying their fees.

  • We need all families paying as early as possible, preferably by the end of Term 1.

  • We want all students to participate in school activities; however, Governing Council has endorsed the policy that students will not be included in excursion/other performances until their $45 levy has been paid.

The school will receive the full legally enforceable $185.00 materials and services charge for Happy Valley School school card holders.  This means that school card holders will be asked to pay a total of $95 -- the Performance Levy and the voluntary Governing Council Curriculum Levy, Information and Communication Technology Levy.

It is essential that families who are eligible for school card apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE otherwise the school misses out on the government funding and those families will then incur the legally enforceable fee of $185.  School Card Application Forms need to be filled in every year.

The Governing Council has endorsed the use of debt collectors to recover outstanding materials and services charges.  We have tried hard to avoid this but in fairness to all those who do pay their fees we feel that this course of action needs to be taken, particularly when agreements are not met and letters and phone calls are not responded to.  If you have in the past, paid your full fees by instalments, we will continue to provide this flexibility during terms 1 and 2.

If in any way you have difficulty with payment, please do not hesitate to contact either Andrea Roberts, our finance officer, or myself.

Kylie Raymond
Principal
