FROM KYLIE

CAR PARK GATES
I know that many of you have noticed that our Staff Car Park gates have been shut in the morning and afternoons recently. This is for student and staff safety

We have had a number of "near misses" in the car park lately due to parents using the area inappropriately. This is a serous matter and as the site manager I take safety responsibilities very seriously.

The driveway is quite narrow and curving, reducing visibility, but the risk is dramatically increased by the speed used by some drivers and the congestion caused when parents choose to park along it.

This area in not a drop-off zone and is clearly marked "Staff Only" at the gate. Students are not allowed in the area and if found there it is deemed "out of bounds" and Time-Out is the consequence.

The gates will remain shut in the mornings and afternoons for the foreseeable future.

UNIFORM
I know that it's the time of year when it's really hard to get washing dry etc but we have noticed a number of students not adhering to our Happy Valley dress code.

In particular we have noticed girls wearing jewellery that pose a safety issue such as long dangling earrings and long necklaces that can easily catch on equipment etc. The policy states that "the wearing of jewellery is not permitted except for sleepers, studs and medical alert bands."

We have also noticed a range of track pants being worn that are also not compliant with our policy. "Track pants can be bottle green, black or grey but must be plain with no logos or decorative trims".

If your child for whatever reason cannot wear dress code there must be a note in their diary/communication book.

Pupil Free Day and School Closure - Monday September 8th and Tuesday 9th
Reminder: The school will be closed for students on both days.

HATS ARE BACK

You may recall our recent change to our SunSmart policy where hats could be left off for the winter months. With spring approaching and UV levels increasing, we again require our students to wear their hats outdoors.

School legionnaire hats are available from the uniform shop Wednesdays 3:00-3:30, Fridays 8:30- 9:00 or from the payment window at the office, Tuesdays to Fridays 8:30 - 9:30 at a cost of $6.00.

BOOK WEEK

Last week was Book Week and this year's theme was "Fuel your Mind."

Children from Lyn Smart's class dressed up as cats based on the book "Cat" by Mike Dumbleton and Craig Smith.

We started the week with a fabulous parade where classes dressed up as a favourite character and all marched around the netball courts. On "Drop Everything and Read" day we left any work and read for 5 minutes when a special siren went. This was repeated several times over the day. Story telling sessions were a great opportunity too for teachers to read their favourite book to their class and buddy class.

Shelley Saunders and her class are having fun dressed up as mice.  The have been reading the book "Shhh! Little Mouse" by Pamela Allen.

We had a terrific week and special thanks to Sandra Daldry for coordinating it all.

JUNIOR PRIMARY AWARDS

At our Junior Primary assembly this week, awards were presented to several children for demonstrating one of our school values. Children who received awards were Logan W., Travis P., Sarah C., Angus S., James D., Zane M., Jasmine V., Lachlan G. and Tyler S. Well done to these people.

BEACH BASH FISH CAFE

Last week, Sue Higgins' and Lynn Craig's classes performed their great musical, "Beach Bash Fish Cafe" in the school hall. All classes attended the daytime performances, together with some residents from Bethsalem Aged Care Facility and children from Chandlers Hill Kindergarten. Families were able to see the "evening show" on Wednesday night. The musical was a fantastic opportunity for children to demonstrate their confidence in performing on stage.

Special thanks must go to Sue and Lynn for the time and effort which they put into making the show such a great success.

Some children from Sue Higgins's Year 1/ 2 class used De Bono's Thinking Hats to give feedback about the performance.

Red Hat Thinking (Feelings)

I felt happy.  I felt nervous.  I was excited.
Yellow Hat Thinking (Good Points)

Everyone had a part and it was exciting. I haven't been in a play before and it was good.

Blue Hat Thinking (Organization of Thinking)

We had to organize costumes.
We had to be organized getting on the stage.

Black Hat Thinking (Bad Points)
Some people hadn't learnt the words to the song.  People were talking.
Green Hat Thinking (Different Ideas)

Next time we could do a different play.
We could have moved and grooved more.

White Hat Thinking (Information)

I learnt about the sea.
The reef is in danger from global warming.

MATHS AT HOME

Have fun with more mathematical ideas to work on at home.

Bounce into Maths  Many children love to play ball games.  Help your child to learn their tables by playing a ball game with them.  First, ask a tables question, e.g. 7 x 9.  If your child answers correctly then they can have a shot at the basket or a kick for goal, etc.  Ensure you score so effort is rewarded, e.g. a goal = two points; if the ball hits the ring without going inside, then score one point.  Your child then asks you a tables question.  You can also play in teams.

The Clock is Ticking  You need a ball and a timer (the timer on the stove will do) for this game.  Set the timer for five minutes, ask a tables question that your child should know and then throw the ball to them.  After your child answers correctly, they ask you (or another player) a new question as they throw the ball to them.  Questions and answers continue in this way until the timer rings.  The person holding the ball at this time is out.

What am I?  When travelling long distances by train or by car use the time to play maths games.  This game can be played anywhere without any equipment.  Here's how.  One person thinks of 'something' to do with maths, e.g. they might think of the number: 1984.  They then give the other players two clues, e.g. 'I am a number between 1000 and 2000.  I am an even number.'  The other players must then ask questions that can be answered with a 'Yes' or 'No'.  The first player to correctly guess the answer takes the next turn at choosing another maths idea.  You could focus on numbers, shapes, distances, weights etc.

NATIONAL LITERACY & NUMERACY
WEEK

Next week is National Literacy and Numeracy Week.  All Junior Primary students in our school will be participating in Reach for the Stars, an activity designed for students from pre-school to junior secondary school where schools will investigate throwing coins at a target under various conditions.

Students  will  be  using  coins  to  toss

onto a target and recording the total  number of coins that landed in each area. Each class will decide the number of throws made by each student, what kind of coins used and the distance from the target (100cm, 150cm and/or 200cm).

We will then submit our data online to be collated with other schools around Australia.  A summary of the national results will be available by Tuesday 9th September 2008.

Lyn Smart - Junior Primary Numeracy Co-ordinator.

LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

Staff, students and volunteers will be involved in a lockdown or invacuation drill next week. This is a response to a potential emergency situation where all present on site are required to move to a secure area.

We are required to practise these drills annually. Students will be prepared for the drill by their class teachers.

CAN YOU HELP US PLEASE?

Over the last years, the Junior Primary team have had a focus on developing Play Boxes for children to use in class play sessions. We have a number now, including Camping, Hairdresser, Restaurant and Magic and Make Believe Play Boxes. In each box we make sure that we include props which can be used to further develop children's literacy and numeracy skills -- for example, recipe books, story books, menus, travel maps. The children also develop their own props.

We would now like to make a "Vet's" Play Box. We are asking for donations of props to include in our box. Firstly, if any parents have access to veterinary equipment, we would really appreciate donations. (Safe, of course). Also we would love to have any soft, clean toy animals to "treat" at the clinic. If you have anything to donate, please bring it to the front office.

Many thanks,

Judy Davis
(On behalf of the Junior Primary Team)

RESOURCE CENTRE

POTLUCK WINNERS
Students have the opportunity to receive a potluck ticket for their co-operation in the Resource Centre.  These tickets are placed into a potluck container, and twice a term, 4 tickets are randomly selected.  The 1st ticket is given a $10 voucher to select an item from the latest Scholastic Book Club brochures.  The 2nd, 3rd, 4th tickets are given a $1 canteen voucher.  All tickets in this container are then placed into another box and held until the end of the year.  Another big draw is done.  The 1st ticket drawn gets first pick of a selection of prizes, the 2nd ticket gets the second pick and so on, until all the prizes have been claimed.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE 2008
It's not too late!
We encourage all students to finish the challenge.  It is being supported by all teachers and the Resource Centre.

What awards are there each year?
1st year            Certificate
2nd year          Bronze medal
3rd year           Silver medal
4th year           Gold medal
5th year           Champion medal
6th year           Legend medal
7th year           Hall of Fame medal

Do you still get an award if you missed a year? Yes, just add up the years you have completed the challenge and you will get the appropriate award.

Close off date is 5th September.  No late forms can be accepted.

THANK YOU
Thank you for the warm welcome back after my Long Service Leave in Canada.  I didn't realize so many people had connections with Canada.  Thank you also to Sandra Daldry for her work in the lead up to and including Book Week.  The artwork depicting the short listed books is a wonderful sight.  Do come in and see!

HELP
There are many new books catalogued and waiting to be covered.  We have a volunteer who has been doing a wonderful job BUT we need a back up to help out when she can't come in to help.  Could you be the person who can spare a morning or two to help out?  Training is provided.

CHILDREN WHO ARE ILL

It is during this time of year that many of us are susceptible to one or more of the many viruses going around.  As a result, we are experiencing a higher than normal absentee rate amongst students.

We are urging parents to not send their child/ren to school if they are unwell.  If the teacher believes the child is ill, he or she will ask the office staff to contact the parent or carer to collect him or her.

Sending your child to school when they are ill helps spread the virus to others as does allowing the child to return too soon.  Please make sure your children have completely recovered before doing so.

PEDAL PRIX

Kuitpo Forest Ride
Sunday 17th August, 17 riders and their families met at Kangarilla Oval and travelled to Rocky Creek picnic area for a ride or walk through the forest.  The weather held off for us, the sun shone while we rode and walked and a light drizzle was not enough to stop every one enjoying their sausage sizzle under the pine trees after the ride. As we drove home quite a thick fog had settled over the hills.

The team has some exciting news.  We are able to borrow a bike for our Murray Bridge race.  Due to circumstances beyond our control, the finalizing of the new bike for our race was looking very tight.  The bike we are borrowing is a copy of what our new bike will be like.  Another Primary school has borrowed it the last two years and has finished high up in the results.

Change in bikes
Because of the change in vehicles, the training for this week will be moved from Mitsubishi to Victoria Park.  It will be at the same time, 1pm -- 4pm on Sunday 31st August.  All three bikes will be there to ride but still bring your own bike if you can.

Murray Bridge
There are only 4 more weeks left before the race!!  Riders will soon receive their final list of things to bring to Murray Bridge as well as the map showing our pit site.

If you want an exciting day, come up to Murray Bridge on the 20th and 21st and cheer our teams on.  It is a great experience.

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

Happy Valley has celebrated one of its most successful seasons in the Southern Chess League.

The competition's presentation night has been held at Woodcroft College, and our teams and individual players came away with a medals haul of Olympic proportions.

The Junior Team of Jacob B., Sam C., Aniket D., Max M., Daniel R. and Toby R-Z. collected the team's first Gold Medal since 2003.  Happy Valley dead heated with Pilgrim College on 14.5 games each. Both schools share the Competition Shield. Sam also collected an individual Silver Medal for winning all but one of his six games and Jacob took out a Bronze for winning four.

The Senior team of Jesse H., Laura S., Adam D., Justin S. and Deayana B. took out team Silver Medals for coming second in the Lightning Carnival with 17.5 wins from 25 games.

Page 6

A special mention to Adam D. who went through undefeated winning all five of his lightning games.

Laura Smith won an individual Silver Medal in the Senior Team Competition.

This year also saw a team made up of Happy Valley and Reynella players called Happy Nella, in the Junior Comp.  William B., Ashley A., Aiden L., (Rey.) Joshua R. (Rey.)and Christina H. (Rey.) combined well and improved in leaps and bounds as the season progressed.

Ashley collected a coveted award for his drawn game against a Chess Master on Simul Night.

Thanks to all the players and their parents for making it a memorable Season 2008.

Mark and Yvonne Smith - Co-ordinators.

SPORT

SOCCER
The end of season presentation will be held in the school hall on Monday 15th September at 6.00pm.  We will supply pizzas and soft drinks and ask that each family bring along something to share for dessert.

Both of our teams finished off the season with strong wins.  The seniors beat St. Johns Grammar 11-3 and the Under 10s won 6-1 against Brighton.  Well done to all the players - these results show the improvement the children have made since the beginning of the season.

Good luck to the Under 10s tonight in their lightning carnival at Bowker Street.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the presentation.

Thanks,

Gary Kite - Soccer Coordinator

FOOTBALL
It has been a great season for football with plenty of wins and a few losses. There is only one game remaining, so if you haven't seen your child play this season this is your last chance to see them in action.

Presentation for the 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 will be held on the 13th of September starting at 11.00 am in the Happy Valley School hall.

On the day there will be cans of drinks and a sausage sizzle for the football players.  Could parents please donate $2 each on the day to cover costs? I am also asking if parents could provide a plate of sweets, cakes, salads etc. to go with the sausage sizzle.

A reminder that ALL football tops are to be returned on the day THOROUGHLY CLEANED

On game days some parents have been asking other parents for a donation towards the coaches' presents. Please give them a donation, as coaches are hard to come by and deserve recognition for their efforts.

I have been very impressed with the children's attitude towards football this year. WELL DONE.

Please remember that the school will need a DELEGATE for the season 2009 so someone must step up and take on that role as football will not be played next season without one.

Again a big THANK YOU
