SPORTS DAY
Reminder: Sports Day tomorrow - Friday March 20th.
Start time: Children report to classrooms at 8.15am.
Sports Day Opening will be at 8.25am.
The program should finish at 1.50pm, when children will be dismissed from the oval.
Programs have now been sent home. If you did not receive one, please see Amelia.

We always need lots of parent helpers on the day. If you are able to help, please see your child's/ children's class teacher.

For parents of Junior Primary children - please be aware that the JP program concludes at approximately 12.15pm, just prior to lunch.  Parents are free to collect their children and take them home at this stage. Teachers will need to account for all students remaining, so please let your child’s teacher know if you are taking them home.

From JUDY

Kylie has been on the sick list this week, so I have added some more information about Ian Lillico's work.

Ian Lillico -- Boys and Education
We said in the last newsletter that we would include more information from Ian's presentation on how we can successfully educate boys in our current system.  Ian provided us with many strategies and ideas to support our boys (and girls) both in their academic and social skills learning.

74 parents and staff from Aberfoyle Hub School, Regional Office and our own school attended the Thursday evening session.  Ian's main message to parents/caregivers was to build relationships with your boys...... and to be aware that they are very different beings to when you were their age.

He shared with us research by Professor Loretta Giorcelli showing that adolescents today are:
- Less attentive - (attention span = (age + 3) minutes)
- More attention seeking
- More impulsive
- Less compliant and more argumentative
- More technically competent
- Under more personal pressure
- More globally connected
- Have higher IQ scores -- this does not mean they do well in tests or work situations.

Ian reiterated that boys are many things including....

Humorous, Imaginative, Straight-talking, Spontaneous, Technically Competent, Loud Risk-takers, Impulsive, Competitive, Curious, Caring, Logical, Mimics, Honest, Hungry, Hands-On, Helpful, Energetic, Tactile and Physical

....and often they have a tough exterior but are soft underneath.  So where does this tough exterior come from?  Ian shared with us work by William Pollack from his book "Real Boys" who says it comes from the "boy's code", of which there are 4 main ideas....

'The sturdy oak' -- boys must be strong and show no weakness
'Give 'em hell' -- bravado and attraction to violence, the "boys will be boys" myth
'The big wheel' -- in power, it's cool, status and dominance
'No sissy stuff' -- don't show affection, warmth and dependency

This often means our boys are leading double lives.... the external being (what they show the world) and their internal being (how they are really feeling).  It's hard to lead a double life and still try to learn!

So how do we help our boys overcome this.... we praise them!

Praise according to Ian Lillico comes in 2 parts. The first is where we, as adults, praise the child by describing what we have seen or heard or felt.
An example of this is "Fred, I really liked the way you cleaned your room today.  Well done!"

Now, it is very tempting, to put at the end of this "I wish you could do it all the time!" However, as parents/caregivers and teachers, we need to avoid this, as boys will only hear the negative implication of "it's not good enough" and all our hard work is undone.
The second part is where boys are able, over time, to praise themselves.

In conclusion, to help our boys be successful we need to:

Build positive relationships with them (avoid the yelling and negatives)

Give them immediate, positive feedback (avoid "The next time you could.....")

Challenge them and let them take responsible risks

Decrease their anxiety and increase their attention span

ADVANCED NOTICE: 'DIGITAL LITERACIES'
Presented by IAN LILLICO
This is a session for ALL parents / caregivers to attend, as it is a topic that as adults we can't escape from and we need to get involved in it.  Your child/ren are digitally savvy and engage confidently with Information Communication Technology - YOU need to know what they are up to.  Come along to the information session to be held on Tuesday, May 26th between 7pm and 9 pm in the Hall at Aberfoyle Hub School.  Look out for the flier coming home soon to book your place.  We will arrange a creche for children at a reasonable fee.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Remember that the Fundraising committee is having a Sausage Sizzle on Sports Day, selling sausages, onion and bread, as well as cans of soft drink.

HARMONY DAY

Harmony Day is celebrated on 21st March each year. It celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity.

The key message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Since Harmony Day began ten years ago, thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted Harmony Day events.

We will be celebrating Harmony Day on Monday March 23rd. Classes will participate in a variety of activities, including making people with different coloured wool. As a symbol of harmony a number of our older students have been helping by learning how to make the wool people.

We encourage the school community to wear something orange on Monday, to mark the celebration of this day.

ROAD CROSSING USE

Following our articles in the last Newsletter regarding some adults and children not using the monitored school crossing, it is pleasing to report fewer incidents of this dangerous behaviour during the past fortnight.

Co-coincidently, an article in last Monday's Advertiser, emphasised that our concerns are warranted and we encourage all adults to continue their positive role modelling.

Many thanks for your support in this important matter.

SECONDARY STUDENTS ATTENDANCE AT SPORTS DAY

After discussion with the District Office and the local High Schools we need to make these points clear.

It is a normal school day for local High School Students and therefore the High Schools expect their students to attend as normal

Attending our Sports Day is not an acceptable non-attendance reason for these students. Any absences will be followed up by Home Class teachers at the High Schools and if necessary consequences will be put in place.

Any students from other schools that come on to school grounds unaccompanied by an adult will be asked to leave by school staff.

We know that families will respect the above points and therefore keep our Sports Day a safe and enjoyable day for all.
Thank you for your cooperation.
                                                                          Kylie Raymond

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING

This week, a number of our Year 7 students have taken part in leadership training at the Education Development Centre at Hindmarsh. This two day program will help prepare students for their role as Year 7 leaders in our school. Watch the next newsletter for reports from the students about these days.

JAPANESE

During the last four years, Happy Valley School has been one of three schools (Belair and Hallet Cove R-12), hosting Japanese Students from Kansai-Gaigo University in Osaka.  The visits are organised by Flinders University as part of the course requirement for the Japanese student teachers who will go on to become English teachers.  This happens twice a year and was another successful experience for both them and our students.

Our students enjoy having new Japanese friends and learn so much about the Japanese language and culture from the experience. It goes without saying that both Japanese students and staff of Flinders University are very impressed with the quality of our school and students every time they visit us.

AQUATICS REPORT

The following are reports compiled by Jordan F. and Brett E.

Canoeing
In Canoeing they had to learn how to row.  The instructors' names were Jeff and Carly.  They did Canoeing in the river at Port Noarlunga beach.  They thought it was fun.  Lots of people fell in the water the first time but they got the hang of it later.  They had to stand up, swap canoes and then sit down in the other one.  They learnt how to paddle backwards and they had to pretend to save people.  On the last day they swam at the beach.

Canoeing.  Learning how to paddle.

Page 4

Body Boarding
In Body Boarding they just mostly had free time.  Their instructor's name was Suzy.  They had to walk a very long way to get to the spot where they had to Body Board.  They got to do anything they wanted to.  They Body Boarded on some waves and got dunked loads of times.  The learnt how to do 180s, 360s and how to kneel on the board.  They also learnt how to sit on the board and keep their steadiness over small waves.

The Body Boarders learning to keep steady.

Surfing
In Surfing they had to walk to almost the same spot as the Body Boarders which was a long way.  They learnt how to paddle and stand up at the right time and how to ride a wave in.  They drew in the sand how a rip is formed and how surfers use them as an advantage and at the end of the week almost everyone had stood up and rode a wave in.

Our surfers hunting for the big one!

Snorkelling
In Snorkelling they learnt what the hand communications were.  They mainly had free time looking around under the sea.  They got to go off the end of the jetty where there were lots of fish by the reef.  They got to go behind the reef into the open sea.  One team saw a shark, the other team wasn't so lucky.

And where was that shark?

Fishing
In fishing they had to learn how to cast out and where to cast out.  They learnt what fish they were allowed to keep and which ones they had to let go.  Some fished for squid and some just fished for any type of fish.  They went to the river and fished for Bream.  Some stranger caught a squid and they learnt how a squid swims and eats.

Fishing takes a lot of patience!

Wave Skiing
In Wave Skiing they learnt how to steer the wave ski and where to sit in it.  They got to go down to the reef and see what is in the reef.  On the last day they went around the reef then they caught some waves.  A lot of people got dunked in the waves.  The last thing they did was a race.

Checking out the reef

Sail Boarding
In Sail Boarding they learnt how to steer the sail board.  They learnt how to balance on the sail board and how to pull the sail up.  They learnt how to close the door (speed up).  On the last day they took off the sail and just paddle.

Sail Boarding -- it just looks like hard work!

PEDAL PRIX

There has been a good student response to Pedal Prix this season.  We have nearly 30 students who have returned their agreement forms so it is time to have a parent meeting to organise a committee and calendar.

There have been some interesting happenings since the last newsletter.  We usually only enter race 2 and 3 but this year have decided to enter the first race with just one car.  This will be an extra competition that will not be part of the usual fundraising.  The team will be picked on strength and fitness.

The other development is a Pedal Prix idea.  The second race (July 26th) is now a NINE HOUR RACE!!  It will still start at 10 but now finishes at 7pm.

The meeting will be held at 7pm Thursday 26th March in the Resource Centre.

On Monday and Tuesday this week, during lunch time, the Viper was on the hard play area for students new to Pedal Prix to have a ride in.  Year six and seven students who had competed last year did a very good job of explaining the skills required and rules to the new students.

All parents of Pedal Prix students are expected to come to the meeting, not just the new parents.  Students are welcome.  If everyone puts in an effort, it will make life much easier for everyone.  Please contact the school or Wendy if this date is a problem.

CONGRATULATIONS VANESSA!

Vanessa Kreslin a Year 7 student in Mr Draper's class won her first State Swimming Championship medal at North Adelaide.  She came 3rd in the U/11 50metre Breastroke in a time of 42.29 beating her previous best time by 2 seconds.

SOCCER
We will be having a registration night on Wednesday 25th March at 6.30pm in the OSHC room.  All children who returned their soccer nomination forms and their parents are requested to come along.  Also most welcome is anyone who did not submit a form but would like to play soccer this year.

The meeting should only go for about 30 minutes and will allow us to firm up player numbers for our team nominations and let everyone know what is happening in school soccer in 2009.

It would be great to get a few more boys and girls for our Under10 team (born in 1999 or 2000).  This year, there are also opportunities for children born in 2001 or 2002 to play modified rules on a smaller field in smaller teams.  This allows them to develop their skills without some of the pressures normally associated with competitive sports.

We also have a policy of equal playing time so everyone who wants to participate gets a fair run each week.

Finally, I would like to thank Anita Deakin who has offered to help me out and fill the role of assistant co-ordinator this year.
See you on the 25th.

Gary Kite

NETBALL
Teams should be organised by the end of next week.  There will be two teams but we would like a couple of extra players in each.  We play on Saturday mornings either 9.00am or 10.00am in Terms 2 and 3.

If anyone is interested in playing, please see Amelia in the front office or Karen in the Canteen for an enrolment form.
