HOMEWORK GRID
Homework is always a controversial issue in any school and recently it has hit the headlines again with some educational "experts" saying that homework is not useful.

Here at Happy Valley we have debated this regularly in staff meeting. We believe that children should participate in some literacy and numeracy activities at home e.g. reading. We also know that families now live very busy lives balancing work, sporting and recreational activities, family life, social commitments, house chores and 101 other things that 21st century life demands of us.

When we recently attended Ian Lillico's presentation on our pupil free day, he talked about a successful strategy that many schools have used which we thought could be an answer to the homework puzzle.

Next term all classes will be trialling the use of the "Homework Grid".

The grid will vary slightly from year level to year level, but basically a grid of activities will be sent home and over a two week period a certain number of the activities will need to be undertaken and signed off.

These activities will include school work such as reading, spelling or numeracy activities, but it will also include a large number of other activities such as helping around the house or participation in sporting or musical practices. The grid will have some activities that must be completed regularly and some that will be once a fortnight.

Some choice will be able to be made about which activities suit families, so when your child brings home the grid you will need to work out what works for your child.

We will trial the grid over the full term and then ask for formal feedback. We ask that you give it a go and see how it can work for your family. From the research that Ian has completed over the last 10 years, most students and families think that it is a very positive solution to a sometimes difficult to manage problem. Let's see how it works for us!

STAFFING NEWS
Lynn Craig will not be returning next term as expected, so we are pleased to announce that Jo Chesson will remain with us in term 2 continuing with her class in T1.

STAFF CAR PARK
After a wonderful start to the year we seem to have a number of parents using the staff car park again as a drop off zone. I personally have seen several "near misses" particularly in the morning as children walk through the car park after parents have dropped them off.

The staff car park is OUT OF BOUNDS TO STUDENTS and the consequence is a Time Out.

If this continues to be a problem next term we will need to close the gates again.

IAN LILLICO -- DIGITAL LITERACIES
PARENT WORKSHOP

Just a quick reminder about our parent session, which is coming up early next term. This is a session for ALL parents / caregivers to attend, as it is a topic from which we as adults, can't escape and we need to get involved.  Your child/ren are digitally savvy and engage confidently with Information Communication Technology - YOU need to know what they are up to.

Come along to the information session to be held on Tuesday, May 26th between 7pm and 9 pm in the Hall at Aberfoyle Hub School.  Look out for the flier coming home soon to book your place.  We will arrange a creche for children at a reasonable fee.

HARMONY DAY -- MARCH 21st

At Happy Valley, we celebrated Harmony Day on Monday March 23rd. A number of students wore orange and classes focused on the Harmony Day message "Everyone Belongs."

Jasmine and Sophia helping with a poster.

Children across all year levels made people with wool, and some classes made posters. Other activities included making orange friendship bands, and also making paper children holding hands for Everyone Belongs.

Hannah and Ashton with their people made from wool.

SPORTS DAY

PRIMARY SPORTS DAY
Sports Day was held in warm conditions on Friday March 26th. The students arrived for the early start proudly sporting their teams colours and optimistic about their chances of winning. Throughout the day the scores remained close with Mason holding a slender lead but ultimately Shepherd performed best in the relays and finished the day with a narrow win.

Final Scores

Shepherd          2142

Mason              2133

Nicolle             1912

Chandler          1900

The sportsmanship and enthusiasm shown by the students was outstanding and they should be very pleased with their own performances.

The house captains should also be commended for their contribution, not only to the day but also the team preparation prior to sports day.

The support for the students from their families and friends was excellent with many wearing the team colours of their children. Thank you to all who could attend the day and particularly those who assisted in the running of the various events.

Thanks must also go to all of the staff for their efforts with organisation and scoring and to Mike Lane for his excellent work in preparing the oval for the day.

JUNIOR PRIMARY SPORTS DAY
The five junior primary classes moved through a series of sport skill sessions hosted by development officers from each of the sports represented. This year students practised skills in Soccer, Tennis, Gymnastics and Baseball. They also participated in parachute activities. It was great to have expertise in these sports available and the students enjoyed the experience.

JAPANESE  AWARDS

A number of Junior Primary children have been presented with awards by Oka Sensei for demonstrating excellent skills and enthusiasm in Japanese. Congratulations to Zane M., Jasmine V., Serena B., Chelsea Z. and Merian S.

PAYMENT OFFICE OPEN TIMES

The payment office is open Tuesday to Friday, 8.30 to 9.30 am.  It is not open for money collections on Mondays.  Monies received at the Front Office when the finance officer is not present are not able to be receipted. For security reasons, students are asked to bring any payments to the office in the morning before classes commence instead of keeping them in their bags during the day.

"Where responsible precautions have been taken to safeguard school moneys, and such money is taken, the Principal will not be required to replace the money stolen." (DECD Site Financial Management.)

Please note -- PAYMENT OFFICE CLOSED
The payment office will be unattended on the last day of term, Thursday 9th April as several staff members will be absent on that day.  Please make any outstanding payments on Tuesday or Wednesday morning.  Payment options are cash, cheque, EFTPOS and over the internet from the school web page, www.happyvalley.sa.edu.au

STUDENT EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

A significant number of year 7's were, recently,  fortunate enough  to participate  in a  two day Leadership conference

held at the Education Development Centre at Hindmarsh.  The program focused on exploring what effective leaders do and highlighted 5 essential aspects of good leadership summarised with the acronym of VVORT  that is-
Vision, Voice, Organisation, Responsibility and Teamwork

Students were introduced to some good techniques and tools of leadership and were able to practice them in workshop sessions.

Students spoke highly of the value of the conference. We have no doubt they will put much of what they learnt into good use in the various roles they will play in the School’s Student Leadership Council.

Tony Trimboli and Carol Atherton

On the 18th and 19th March a group of Year 7 members of the Student Leadership Council attended a two day conference.

The conference taught us about respect and how to develop confidence and leadership skills.

We learnt about rotational brainstorming, the fish bowl activity, having a vision and working through organisation and planning activities to achieve an end result.

We have gained a lot of experience from this conference and hope that other Year 7's in the future have the same experience we did.

FURNITURE TO GIVE AWAY

As we are "de -cluttering" the front office area we have a single divan bed and mattress that is surplus to our needs.

If you can make use of it please contact the front office. You will need to arrange your own pick up however.

We will also have a good number of student desks and chairs that too, are no longer required and need to be disposed of. Again please register your interest with the front office and we will contact you about pick up.

CONGRATULATIONS EMILY!

On Saturday 28th March, Emily D. competed in a state final swimming competition and she got the gold medal for fastest non club member in 50 metre Breast-stroke.  It was at the North Adelaide Aquatics Centre in an Olympic sized swimming pool.

First she was in the championship race and she came in 1st place and, as a result, then moved to the state final race and was awarded her gold medal.

In the championship race her time was 49.93 seconds and in the final race her time was 50 seconds.

RESOURCE CENTRE

SECOND HAND BOOK SALE
We have a quantity of deleted books which will be on sale throughout the term for only 10 cents each.  A VERY cheap way of getting some good reading material.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
We already have a number of students who have completed their challenge!  Come in to the Resource Centre and see their star pictures on the PRC noticeboard.  There is no reason at all that EVERY student cannot complete this -- you have until the 4th September to read a minimum of only 12 books. There is a very wide selection of PRC books in the Resource Centre.  Just look for the RED (Reception - Yr 2), GREEN (Yr 3 - 5) or YELLOW (Yr 6 - 9) sticker on the appropriate books.

THANKS PICADILLY SPRINGS!

Our appreciation and thanks are extended to Wade Stone from Picadilly Springs for his kind donation of a further two cases of bottled, Neverfail, Spring Water for our Traffic Monitors.

If you have a need for Spring water then check out what Picadilly can do for you.

Wade can be contacted on 13 3037 or 0411648530.

HELICOPTER VISIT

We had an unexpected visit from the Channel 7 helicopter on Monday afternoon, after they had filmed the nearby fire in the Onkaparinga Gorge, and arranged a rendezvous with the car crew on our oval after school. Imagine our surprise when it was still here on Tuesday morning!

The helicopter was unable to restart and so had to spend the night on the oval (well guarded, of course). This provided a fantastic  learning  opportunity  for the  children  who got  to

have a close up look, whilst repairs were being done.

Here is what some of them wrote.

Today I saw a helicopter on the oval.  We took photos.  We saw the helicopter take off.

Gypsy

Yesterday there was a helicopter on our oval.  It was there for a night and we got to see the helicopter fly.

Leah

Today there was a helicopter on our oval.  It broke down.  We went to have a look at it.  We drew it.  It was fun.

Jazzy

When I came to school I saw a helicopter on the oval.  It was broken down.  The security guard was sleeping in the helicopter on the back seat.  There was lots of controls in the helicopter.  There was a lever that has two buttons.

SAPSASA SWIMMING

Last Thursday three students from Happy Valley went to the SAPSASA Swimming at North Adelaide. The three students who participated in this event were Vanessa K., Eleanor K. and Brett E. All of the swimmers did an excellent job with Vanessa winning a bronze in the 50m Breastroke. This means Vanessa has the opportunity to go to Perth in September this year.

Eleanor swam in the 50m Butterfly and the relay with three other girls and did a fantastic butterfly swim and Brett swam in the freestyle relay and the backstroke leg in the medley relay also doing an excellent swim. Vanessa swam in the 50m Breastroke, the 50m Freestyle and the 50m Backstroke.

We hope these children keep their swimming careers up. Congratulations to them all.J

SPORT

NETBALL
Next Wednesday 8th April we will be having a netball get together.  Both teams will be required to attend.  If you are unable to, please let Karen (Canteen) or Amelia (Front Office) know.

We have enough girls for two teams but I require a Coach/Manager for the older girls (Years 5 - 7).  I will be coaching the younger team.

I also require two umpires for home games on a Saturday morning.  These games are paid for by us.  If you would be able to help, please see me in the Canteen or ring 8322 4257.

The first game is on 9th May in Term 2.  Practice will start first week back on a night to be decided at next week's meeting.  Hope to see you all there.

SOCCER
If you have not already done so, can you please return your registration form to the front office as soon as possible.  This will enable us to firm up player numbers when nominating our teams.  Thanks to all those who attended last week's registration night - here is an update on each team:

Senior Primary - Michael Fowler has agreed to take on the role of coaching this team.  He will be well known to most players and parents as he coached the U10s in 2006 and 2007.  Due to work commitments, Michael will find it difficult to get to training after school.  However, he is looking at the possibility of having a training/introduction session on a Saturday morning early in term 2 before the season starts on May 16th.
Under 10 - We are still looking for someone to manage this team on Saturday mornings.  To field a team, we need someone, or a few people, to put their hand up so these children can get a game.  We also really need at least a couple more players for this team as we are on the edge with numbers.  This team is for children born in 1999 and 2000 - if you think your child might want to play please give Anita or Gary a call.
Under 8 - Things are looking more promising for getting a team together in this age group for the first time.  Numbers are steadily building and it was pleasing to see some new faces at the registration meeting.  I have had an offer to look after this team but we still need just a few more children born in 2001 or 2002 to ensure we have enough players.  We would love to see the sport grow at this level to feed our senior teams of the future.  Please give Anita or Gary a call if your child is interested.

If you want to know more about the association that we play in, check out the website at www.sdjsa.com.

SAPSASA CRICKET
Happy Valley today played Woodcroft Primary in the second round of the SAPSASA knockout competition for large schools.  We reached the second round after a good win against Antonio school last week in round 1.  Happy Valley fielded first and restricted Antonio to just 8/81 from their allocated 25 overs.  This was due to some tight bowling from Dylan C (2 wickets), Sean M, Caleb D and Jake S together with some excellent fielding from the whole team.  We made hard work of the run chase however, and wickets fell steadily around Caleb D who held the innings together with a well made 37 runs.  Matthew K and Jake S then batted very sensibly for the last few overs before scoring the winning runs in the second last over.  Happy Valley finished on 6/87 and it

was a happy bunch of players who celebrated the win.  Hopefully by the time you read this, we will be celebrating a second round win.
