Pupil Free Day -- Monday October 25th  (NEXT Monday)
On this day, staff will be looking at student achievement data from this year and making plans for improvement next year.

                                         Class Placement
We will be starting this process very soon.  If you have a request for us to consider, please PUT IT IN WRITING ADDRESSED TO KYLIE AND MARKED CONFIDENTIAL BY FRIDAY OCTOBER 29th.
Do not rely on conversations you may have had with Leadership Team members during the year, or on information from past years, as we destroy all parent request letters once placement has been finalised as the nature of many of them is highly confidential. WE ARE NOT "MIND READERS" SO BE CLEAR WITH YOUR REQUESTS.

A Great Start
We have had a very smooth start to the term so far, with students and teachers returning to work routines very easily.
Welcome back to Helen Whisson after a wonderful holiday and thanks to Jenna Knight for all her efforts with the class.
Our buildings are slowly coming together and should be completed by the end of next week (keep your fingers crossed).
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen is also looking pretty good and we should have a "kitchen specialist" in place soon.
The term will go very quickly with a number of special events such as Sports Day, Camps and day excursions planned.
Of course we will also have all the traditional end of year celebrations this term as well so make sure that you study the Term Planner carefully and mark in the dates on your calendar.

On A Personal Note
I enjoy working in our Happy Valley community immensely and I believe that to do this effectively I need to be always ready to give 100% of my efforts 100% of the time.
The Happy Valley family is that important to me, but my own family is more important, and at the moment my family needs to take precedence.
Already this term, I have taken some leave and will need to take more personal leave over the course of the term for family reasons.
I do not do this lightly, but our family situation is such, that it has become a necessity.
I will be around the place (and sticking my nose in) even if I am officially on leave, but I will need to delegate many tasks over the coming weeks to others and I know that you will understand that.
We are so very lucky here at HVS that we have so many willing and able staff that can perform leadership tasks well, so I know that I leave the school in safe hands, and as I have said, I will only be a phone call away.
I also know that you will all respect my privacy over this matter and I hope that all will be well and back to normal in the New Year.

Our new COLAs (Covered Outdoor Learning Area)
are going up!!

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CHILDREN

On Wednesday last week, eight new Reception children started at Happy Valley for the first time. These children are spread across the existing Reception classes. A special welcome to Jake R., Melissa A. and Chloe T., who are in Lyn Smart's class, to Rory T. and Sasha N., in Abby Ingham's class and also to Lachlan F., Hana W. and Toby W., in Joyce Kerr's class. All have settled in really well.

We welcome, also, a number of other students who have come to Happy Valley from a number of other schools. At our assembly last Friday we welcomed Rhys S., Milan N-H., Sarah B. and Charli R-K.

We are really pleased to be able to have all of these children and their families at Happy Valley.

CLASSES AND NUMBERS FOR 2011

We are currently examining our numbers for 2011. At this stage it remains unclear just how many classes we will have in either Junior Primary or Primary. Although we try very hard to be accurate about new children coming and those leaving it is still too early to make a call. In addition there will be a new funding model from the start of 2011, which may or may not have an impact on how many classes we start with. We will keep you informed as the situation becomes more clear.

PRIMARY AWARDS

In assembly these people have been presented school value awards.
Respect -- Sarah D., Isaac V., Jake H., Max M.

JUNIOR PRIMARY AWARDS

At our Junior Primary assembly this week, several children received awards for demonstrating one of the Program Achieve Keys for Success -- Organisation, Getting Along, Confidence, Persistence and Resilience. Congratulations to Chelsea Z., Naomi B., Talissa M., Latisha K., Jayda L., Jasmine W., Gypsy H., Ewan M., Dechlan H., Ashleigh B., Cassidee F., Emily W., Ella C. and Ella G. Two students also received awards for demonstrating one of our school values -- Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. Congratulations to Jamie B. and India H.

WORLD TEACHERS' DAY

Each year we celebrate "World Teachers' Day" on October 29th. This year we will again acknowledge the wonderful work done by our teachers. We will have a special assembly on Friday 29th, at which we will make presentations to our teachers.

SPORTS DAY and .........

This year our Sports Day will be in Week 4 on Friday November 5th. You may remember that we were unable to have our usual Sports Day in Term 1, due to the building works happening on and near the oval. We are still not sure when the building will be finished but our Sports Day will go ahead on this day. We may have to make some minor adaptations, depending on whether or not the fences are gone but we hope you will bear with us and come along to support this very important day.

Sports captains are busily preparing their teams for a number of events, with practices each recess and lunch. (A sports day programme is included as part of this newsletter.)

School canteen facilities and a sausage sizzle will be available on the day. Again more information about special lunch orders is contained in this newsletter.

Class teachers (particularly Junior Primary) would also welcome a volunteer or two to help out on the day.

HEALTH LIFESTYLES WEEK and .........

During week 4 of this term (Nov 1st - 5th) all students will be involved in a range of activities that promote healthy lifestyles and highlight some of the less traditional sports available in our community. We will be utilising the skills of development officers from a range of sports including, ten pin bowling, archery, rugby union, taekwondo, baseball and dance. Classes will also work in our new kitchen area to prepare and eat some healthy snacks and groups will participate in cooperative games based on the "Play is the Way" program. The week will conclude with our annual sports day scheduled for Friday November 5th.

FUN RUN SPECIAL ASSEMBLY

Special prizes, of sports equipment, have been ordered for children who raised $20 or more and these will be distributed at a special assembly in week 3. The precise day has not been determined (probably Wednesday) but we will let you know in case you wish to attend.

We again thank all families for their generosity and are delighted to announce that $6156.05 was raised.

The winners of a class party were determined by the highest average raised per classroom.
The Junior Primary Class Party winner with a total of $580.40 and an average of $27.64 per class member is Abby Ingham's Reception class.
The Primary Class Party winner with a total of $542.60 and an average of $20.87 per class member is Lynn Craig's Year 3/4 class.
Winners of extra prizes for the highest individual amount raised are Lily and Hanna from Ms. Ingham's class with $122 and $120 respectively and Elijah in Ms Petho's class with $100. Congratulations and well done to everyone!

JUNIOR PRIMARY LUNCHTIME SPORTS EQUIPMENT

An idea that began in the Junior Primary Kooka Council has been implemented this term.  Each student has an equipment borrowing card that they can exchange for a range of sporting equipment each lunch time.  There is quite a line up of students in front of the little shed, that very quickly sorts through, due to the fantastic organisation skills of Lyn Smart's students.

Holly's Highlights
Welcome back!
I hope you all had a great and refreshing break.   I was so relaxed that I kept forgetting what day it was!

It's been a fantastic start to Term 4 with the mentoring groups for boys starting to take shape.  Kylie and I are both excited to have Matt Hocking (previous CPSW here at Happy Valley) & Sam Sherrah come on board.  Between the credibility that Matt's already built with students & Sam's life experience we think this will create a great mentoring foundation for our boys.

A big thank you to those who have made meals for the Meals Freezer over the last term.   Because of your kindness there were a number of families that we were able to support, all of whom were very grateful.  There is an old proverb that says "kind words are like honey - sweet to the soul and healthy for the body".  This can also be true of our actions.  It does something good for the soul when you know you've been able to help make a difference in someone else's world.

Well, that's all from me for this edition.  Have a great fortnight!

SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS SUPPORT
The Salvation Army runs a program designed to help and support families at what can be one of the most stressful times of year.  In conjunction with the Kmart Wishing Trees and donations from our generous community, they can offer assistance with toys and food for the holiday season. They would like to assist as many families within our community as possible, to ease some of this pressure.

Families that might find this support beneficial is welcome to pick up an application form from the front office.  Please complete the forms & return to my letterbox in the office by Tuesday, 9th November.

Thanks,
Holly
Christian Pastoral Support Worker

Kitchen Garden Programme-Volunteers Needed!
A key element to the success of our programme is volunteers. Our cooking programme especially will require 2 or 3 volunteers to be present in each class lesson (duration 90 minutes) held fortnightly. If you have some time available and would like to be involved in your child's class lesson (or anyone else's class lesson for that matter!) please let the front office or your child's teacher know. Alternatively feel free to talk with Wendy Nicolle our Garden Specialist, Our soon- to -be -appointed Kitchen Specialist or Tony Trimboli our Programme co-ordinator.

The School number phone is 83817166 and the fax is 83816041.

This weekend Bethsalem have an Open Garden Day.  Our school will have a small stall where we will sell some seedlings and have a chance to let the community know about our SAKG program.  We hope this will be another way to find volunteers for our program.  If you have an hour to spare on Saturday between 10am and 3pm please contact Wendy Nicolle on 0421283693.

PARENT CLUB

New reception photos will be on Tuesday 3rd November.  Family photos are being held this Sunday 24th October.
Parent Club will be selling scones/tea/coffee in the morning on Sports Day Friday 5th November. We are looking for helpers.  A notice of times will be sent home on Friday to be sent back to Andrea or Karen in the canteen.

CANTEEN

We welcome back everyone, and an extra special welcome back to Karen who returns from a lovely holiday today.  I would like to give a huge thank you to Lee and Wendy for all their extra help and to all our volunteers for the last couple of very busy weeks.
A new menu went home to all families, no price rise, but some yummy new summer foods added and a few deleted.
A Sports Day Menu has also been sent home to all families.  Orders must be returned to us by Friday 29th October.  We will be selling ice creams, drinks and chips on the day from the Sports Shed Canteen.  Please note regular canteen sheet on the day.  Any one who would like to help us, please come in and see us prior.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS SPORT

Unpaid Sports' Fees
The organised sports clubs within the school provide important extra curricula opportunities for our children. Most clubs have concluded their seasons and celebrated with family togethers and presentation of trophies.
It is unfortunate to report however that there are many families who have not paid the registration fees necessary for the running of the clubs. This means the School is left with a debt and an extra burden on an already tight budget.
If your child has participated in Soccer, Basketball, Cricket and or Football this year can you please check that your fees have been paid and, if not, please attend to this matter as soon as possible.
The following registration fees applied this year:
Cricket- $40
Basketball-$25
Soccer $45

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE

OSHC will be open on the Pupil Free Day, Monday 25th October if there are sufficient numbers. Bookings must be made before 6.15pm on Friday 22nd October 2010.
We are in need of a bird cage for our budgie (Bluey).  If you can help, please come and see us at OSHC.
